Canada and the United States have both been effective partners in NORAD, North America Air Defense Command and kept North America secure. Military cuts going on for decades have eroded both nations capabilities in that crucial mission. Lack of alert fighters, NO defensive missile systems at all closure of prior NORAD bases and no longer an ADC, Air Defense Command within the US. Even offensive systems aren't at the levels they once were although not decimated as much as they systems specifically in place to defend our North American continent. The Liberals from both countries don't seem to understand or even try to understand the risk they put all of the people in Canada and the United States into.

Canada and most members of NATO don't put their 2% of GDP towards offense. Canada Houston helping with pudding soldiers all over the world like Ukraine, the baltics and elsewhere bus their infrastructure is coming apart at the seams. They just retired their leopard 1 tanks. All there destroyers and their supply ships have rusted through or been retired. The Hornets were built in the 1980s and early 90s.. and they naive enough to buy used junkers from Australia.

LTC (Join to see) - Its such a shame especially with Canada actually being a good place to live and work. It takes some support of Canada's Military service to keep that alive. The lack of equipment and support for those armed forces is criminal and the outstanding members of Canada's Military deserve far better for all they have done in the service of their nation. A least as a Retired American Military Veteran My salute to our many friends in the Canadian Military services !

American can't keep the F-35 in the air for all its problems, and yet we still sell this piece of junk to unsuspecting foreign governments.

The Canadian government was even more stupid to buy used Australian F-18 to spite us after they backed out of the F-18 Super Hornet deal. They were going to buy 18 super Hornets as an interim fighter before they decide on the next replacement.

A subtle glance at open source statistics pokes a few holes into this article. It would appear that this is another example of hollow sabre rattling. The Canadian Air Force fighter populations is about 180ish, assuming they have a 100% maintenance rating and all their pilots are standing by- juxtaposed to the US 3300. Russia has maybe 1900 on a very good day. Like most of NATO, the Canadian forces provide a token force. The U.S. in no way counts on a single CF-18 for North American defense. Russian mid air refueling capability is non existent, Alaska and its fighter wings are in the way. Fighters protect bombers, Russian bombers carry atomic weapons because no one has the expeditionary capability to get a toehold in North America. Russia only viable combat projection comes from its offensive nuclear missile capability. The campaign in Syria demonstrated Russia is a paper tiger. Canada could fold its entire military spending and it won’t make a difference in the next war.
