Will Naomi Osaka Pick Japanese Citizenship or American? Her Deadline to Choose Is Looming

Jesse Kuhaulua, an American Hawaiian, went to Japan to become a Sumo wrestler and became the first foreign born national champion. He decided to stay in Japan and operate his own stable of Sumo wrestlers after retirement. He was not a dual citizen. Naomi is of dual citizenship and could use the time until her decision to lobby for Japan to liberalize its citizenship requirements. She is a big enough star that if she would suggest she is going to pick the US, to keep her as a citizen they may reconsider their long standing position on citizenship. We can only hope

On November 24, 1966 at the Gator Bowl, Robert E. Lee HS, my alma mater, played Andrew Jackson HS in the annual Thanksgiving Day rivalry. The game ended in a 7-7 tie. For me (and many others), it was the last organized tackle football game I ever played. I’m #81, second from the right.
