I've read all the books. They are a good read especially if you have long airline flights or other opportunities to kill time. The books are full of well developed characters, a realistic but fictional geography (like Earth almost), a little magic, some ghosts, idol worship, sex, and violence--all the fun stuff. I've seen a few episodes of the HBO Series and they do a pretty good job of hitting the high points of the story. There's a lot more detail in the books of course. Like all good fiction, there's a touch of reality in the books and they pick up on all the traditional themes that make great story telling: Man vs man, man vs God, man vs nature. There's a little too much pure fiction for them to translate well into the contemporary world and to say that an actual person is one of the characters in the books.
