I was not taught in MP school to shoot like this. I have never seen a Mk-19 used as Air Defense Artillery. It will arm itself after 30 meters or so. This could kill Marines and civilans on the ground since the 40mm HE-DP round is armed when it hits the ground.

I've never used the MK19 but was trained in and did use the M79 which launched a single 40 mm grenade (loaded like a shotgun would) and also the then in 1968 XM148 which was a parasite mounted on the lower level of the M16. ( shown in this post is a picture of the XM148 on the M16) The X stood for experimental and it was a new concept which We however our unit was using in Vietnam. The trigger was on the end of a little rod that just stuck out directly below the trigger on the M16 itself did see 1st hand in 1968-69, while I was in Vietnam what the 40 mm round id to whoever was on the receiving end, lets just say it didn't end well for them. My own issue M16 didn't have that launcher on it but I had been trained in its use and have fired them.

Shown here on the left is the MK19 You speak of and on the right the M79 which Our unit did use but of course only fired a single 40 mm grenade and had to be reloaded for each firing.

M79 open for loading position vey much like many single shot shotguns would also be loaded.

LTC (Join to see) - Yes, the M203 You mentioned replaced the earlier experimental XM148 and was improved on in the newer design. Also unlike the XM148 had a trigger guard around the trigger and the position when mounted on a M16 was forward of the M16s magazine location instead of being aft of the magazine area.
