And another little story from my time in Service.
We had a massive Inspection. And the Commander was in a sour mood. Even tho we spent probably four hundred man hours on our barracks...he failed us. So he gave us one more day, or our Four Day Weekend was going to be cancelled.
I don't know how you make shiny ...shinier...but we did it. But I wonder what Civilians would think of forty guys staying awake all night, in just their underwear...so that their Uniforms would stay starched until just moment before Inspection. Nobody went back in that Baracks until the Commander had us "Fall In". At the end, his white gloves were immaculate, the cups on the commodes held sparkling water, and you could use the floor as a mirror.
The Commander told us:
"See what you can do if you try?"
And left.
And for the first day of our Four day weekend, we fell asleep in our Uniforms with starched creases that could leave paper cuts, and we fell asleep on beds tighter than most trampolines, our boots reflecting the daylight back into the room.
And I still hate that guy.

Well, it was a long time ago, but my E-2 ax was assigned to an air base in a desparately poor nation. We were strongly "encouraged" to boost the economy. Tailor shops bars, and maid service/houseboys in the barracks.

You Tube has a video titled "I Picked the Wrong Branch." (Sorry, I'm no good with links.) I just might do a thread inspired by one bit, "What's a tent?" Yes, I think I will.

PO3 Edward Riddle - Yes, We did have mattresses on our bunk beds and fresh clean sheets and pillowcase every week. I was on the top bunk. Hot showers and Yes flushing toilets and even sinks with hot running water.

That certainly bring back memories of GI Parties cleaning everything especially at a SAC Base but standby inspections didn't usually happen. The barracks inspections were however very complete. Our uniforms etc. were already well inspected with in formation open ranks inspections as member of the Air /Security Police. That held true at many bases and after returning from Vietnam, the unit First Sergeant, a CMSgt, (E9) at the USAF Hanscom Field, MA would just open the door, take a quick look and leave. He said it didn't take a white glove to see if Your room was clean, a quick look answered that question. My next Base, Lowry AFB, CO which was ATC, Air Training Command, I lived in Bachelor NCO quarters and We actually had a maid, a full time paid employee make our beds and clean our room Monday to Friday which We paid for weekly a a very reasonable preset rate. In those quarters all the areas of the building, day room, hallways, bathrooms wee professionally cleaned. The day room even had vending machines with glass bottled beer.

SMSgt Lawrence McCarter - RED HORSE has never gotten their due. In the 70's they were all NCO's. Operated heavy equipment with one hand, M-16 in the other. One exception first term airman, must have had mad skills. They had a squadron at Osan, and the Army called on them for maintenance at the DMZ. They were fired at from the North.
My impression is that now, they offer training as an inducement to enlist.

SrA Cecelia Eareckson - minor correction. They were designated combat engineers. Civil engineering was a whole other squadron. With a clubhouse in a far corner of the base.

SGT Kevin Hughes - Squadron barracks bars were being phased out at Osan in 1977. The last were under other commands, being hosted by 51st whatever we were. RED HORSE still had one. I was not allowed in.
