I was thinking about Athletes and Athleticism after watching some of the Plays in Sunday Night Football. And two of the most athletic things I have ever seen with my own eyes. One was at a HS football game. I was standing by the fence and just a few yards away was the Football Field.
The guy holding the down marker, was right against the sideline. A Receiver raced by him, blocking his view. Just then the football flew through the space where the Receiver had been. I bet it wasn't more than a foot or so from the sideline to the down marker guy. And that guy, somehow, not only reached up and caught that ball...but didn't drop the down marker. So years later I told that to a buddy doing some Sports Kinesthesiolopgy Research...and he ran a model of a guy moving his hand from his side to catch a ball. Not a reflex but a reaction time. And he figured that guy must have moved at the speed of an elite Athlete. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 150/160 Milliseconds. And that is what fast draw people pull a weapon out of holster at. And I have never moved that fast in my life.
The second most athletic thing I ever saw, was on a sledding hill when I was in High School. It was a steep hill, and everyone was zipping up and down. A Mom lost her grip on a sled, and her toddler went hurtling down hill towards a tree. A Dad burst out of nowhere, sprinted a good thirty yards, dove, and snatched that kid of the sled before it slammed into a tree and splintered. Not only did he move like lightening, but he pulled that kid off of the sled, tucked him into his belly, and then did a somersault in the snow. Protecting that kid from ever hitting the ground. And the Dad hit so hard he knocked the wind out of himself, but the little tyke was unharmed.
The Mother was doggone near hysterical. All of us teen rushed over to help ...if we could. But other than having the wind knocked out of him, the "old guy Dad" was just fine. And it wasn't even his kid.
So those are two pretty impressive Athletic feats I saw with my own eyes. I couldn't have pulled off either one.
