Document for Today, June 20th:
Original Design of the Great Seal of the United States

Just a few hours after the Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, the first committee to design a seal for the United States was appointed, and its design began. After undergoing numerous changes, on June 20, 1782, the seal was officially adopted by the Continental Congress.

Charles Thomson’s design for the Great Seal of the United States, 1782; Reports of Committees of Congress; Records of the Continental and Confederation Congresses and the Constitutional Convention, 1774-1789, Record Group 360; National Archives.

Good day, my friend SGT John " Mac " McConnell The Great Seal brings to my mind a bit of confusion when my sons were young. One thought the Great Seal was a sea lion type of seal :-) This was probably linked to the Great Pumpkin on the Peanuts Halloween special :-)
Seal's were critically important in the past millennia. They were the means of authenticating a document The Seal of a king, the Pope, and so many other officials was recognizable to their subjects and their enemies. The development of counterfeits was punishable by death.
Six years to develop a Seal that was considered worthy for this fledgling nation may seem long - yet it occurred in wartime and before correcting fluid :-)

The Great Seal / Eye of Providence
"The Great Seal, originated in 1782, is full of symbolic significance. The eye atop the triangle stands for the "Eye of Providence." There are thirteen levels to the triangle, thirteen olive branches, thirteen arrows, and thirteen stars, representing the thirteen colonies and original states. The Latin term above the pyramid is 'Annuit coeptis' which means 'He has favored our undertaking.'
