Fifty years ago today, August 08, 1970, I flew out of Da Nang Air Base South Vietnam and headed for Okinawa. I was finally heading back to the World after two tours in this God forsaken Country! My time here had finally come to an end! I never could understand why Vietnam was called “the Pearl of the Orient!” To me, it was nothing more than a big Shit Hole! Everywhere I went it was hotter than hell and the smell of rotting flesh and death was all around. I remember it like it was yesterday. It’s a part of my life that will never fade away. And let me make one thing perfectly clear, WE DID NOT LOOSE THE WAR IN VIETNAM. The fall of Saigon happened April 30,1975, two years AFTER the American military left Vietnam. The last American troops departed in their entirety March 29, 1973
Therefore, how could we lose a war we had already stopped fighting? We fought to an agreed stalemate. The peace settlement was signed in Paris on January 27, 1973. Also, The US Military never lost a major military defeat, battle, to the VC and/or the NVA , including the battle of TET 1968. Just saying…

Thank You Sgt David G Duchesneau for reminding me of what went on in August of 1970 in Viet Nam. I had just turned 14; however, I was definitely aware of the social change happening in Raleigh NC...
Definitely appreciate your honesty and I definitely agree with the fact the US was Not defeated in Viet Nam

Sgt David G Duchesneau I flew out of Da Nang Air Base in March 1970 but do not remember the date. I do remember the smells and the hot humid heat. There was beauty but more misery and death. I agree with you that we did not lose the war. Semper Fi David.

I left Da Nang Air Base Myself on 02 Apr 69 and certainly agree with all both of You said about the area We were in and the results of the events. I do know also early in the morning when the air was still with the open drainage ditches it stunk ! Other smells also You never forget rotting flesh and even the smell of blood. Those are not things You ever forget and even years alter in both Military and civilian Police work I knew right away when those smells were in my area what it was.
