The article mentioned "new owners" but did not give a number. If NICS is doing their job correctly they would not have than answer.
With that in mind, I would wager the largest percentage of those sales were to folks that already were gun owners. Example; I know a guy here that buys a new firearm sometimes every month, every 3 months at a minimum. (he has the money)
