I posted a question asking how would you inspire fellow veterans to use the VA Healthcare System, for their health care needs. LTC Kevin B. commented with a link to a book titled "Best Care Anywhere, Why VA Health Care Would Work Better For Everyone", on Amazon. I am enjoying the book. I see I am not too old or too smart to learn more.

I have had both good and bad experiences at the VA and the same at civilian hospitals Sister Phyllis. I wish somebody had told me I could sue the VA for one of their doctors screwing up my Thyroid. I found out after my 2-year window was up.

PO3 Edward Riddle I am so sorry you did not know about "Tort Actions". Yes, just in any other medical situation, the option to she for damages is available by filing a Tort claim before two years.

US Attorney is in my city to settle a claim against a surgeon and the facility where he works. It's about time! The criminals are civilians and have been ripping the public for decades. And oh yes, I have had experiences with both and the Army's (VA) is definitely the best. At least better than the one the DOJ is persueing

CPL Douglas Chrysler this is what gets the blood moving. As many veterans as will take advantage gathering knowledge will help empower our resources. The civilian sector is notorious for using us and many of us think they are "sweating the load" to make us better.

Ultimately, we are all responsible for ourselves, including our health. The VA recently screwed up when their bureaucrat doctors prescribed two medications for me without personally examining me. They simply looked at lab reports and decided what I "really needed." I screwed up worse by accepting them. Luckily, my BP dropped to 80/40 which was easy to catch and I looked at the two medications critically. One was for hypertension (which I don't have) and stopped it immediately. The other was for low kidney function which I have and continued it. When I lost bladder control, I checked and discovered that was one of the side effects. I stopped that immediately and made an appointment with a civilian nephrologist who told me to stay off of it. Yes, by one indicator, I have low kidney function, but by all other indicators (which the VA never tested) my kidneys are functioning adequately and there was no good reason to take the risk. Fortunately, I regained bladder control with occasional leakage. I highly recommend my general rule of dealing with the VA: Never let any one of them holding a scalpel get anywhere near me.

CPT Jack Durish first of all, you commented on my post. I almost fell over. LOL! Secondly, yes, you described a big snafoo, by VA providers. Just as I have posted all along, the VA is not perfect. And as others have commented the regions or individual medical centers have issues. This is good because you bring to the table an example of a worse case scenario with your VA experience. For me, I don't won't you to feel I am trying to sell you on my perspective, the VA OIG Oversight, the VISN oversight for regions, the Veterans Congressional Liaison, at DC, local Congress offices, VA Tort Action option are the oversight vehicles I am aware of and have used. They brought about results, not always for me as an individual. This is why the Tort Action is available. My experiences with the civilian sector bites. They have no shame using my health to milk as much revenue out of the VA as they can get away with doing. And then the conditions were left unresolved or treatments never ended. Many veterans who thought private healthcare was a golden fix, now see the light. There is no oversight. They have found themselves running to and fro like tennis balls. Many came running back to in house VA care. So, in your case, you found a civilian expert that you trust and so far the treatment recommendations fit and fix your health needs. Thank you for commenting CPT Jack Durish . I am going to bronze this moment in my mind. :)

I am scheduled to see a nephrologist the beginning of March. We had already decided that we would send all the tests and exam results to my brother-in-law who is a nephrologist. Your post just confirmed our decision. Unfortunately he's on the other side of the country, or I would just go see him.

PO1 Kevin Dougherty I can that exchanging comments helps someone, such as yourself get other perspectives, on similar issues/questions/considerations, as CPT Jack Durish commented in detail on his experience. This is great.
