Foreword by: COL Mike Burroughs, US ARMY (RET), Castle Rock, CO
The title of this book of poems, The Mirror, not only defines the content of the contemporary and lifelong generated poems of William “Bill” A. Stephens Jr., but it is also explanatory of poetry in general. The composition of a poem is the manifestation of feelings and thoughts and words onto paper, by an individual that has served his country proudly. It is the conveyance of ordinary words into other, more poetic words, while the reader is confronted with the task to re-establish the origin of metaphoric words that relate to an individual that is dealing with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
The meaning behind the title of this poetry lies in the fact that Stephens mainly works on poetry that is a reflection of what he actually sees when he looks into the mirror and therefore suggests various levels of perception, interpretation and the consequent formulation of meaning when soldiers return from the battlefield. Stephens uses metaphoric references, evocative phrases, and word-play to evoke virtual feelings, those that are often held inside our warriors for months and sometimes years following their return back to what we would normally think of as a “normal life”.
Here is a great example of what you will experience:
BULLET TO THE BRAIN
YOU'RE STANDING IN A ROOM WITH A CANDLE BURNING BRIGHT.
IN ONE HAND, YOU'RE HOLDING A REVOLVER WITH BULLET IN THE CHAMBER.
YOU'RE PLAYING THE GAME.
ONE SHOT, ONE KILL.
Poetry written and published by Bill Stephens is dynamic, immediate and powerful. Mainly focusing on patriotic, nature and love poems, he endeavors to be honest with a hint of humor – clear about the dilemma of the tension between reality and dream, within a spiritual and predestined awareness of those symptoms experienced by warriors on the battlefield that have left so many confused and untrusting.
IN THE OTHER YOU'RE HOLDING A ROSE.
THE PETALS ARE FALLING ONE BY ONE.
SHE LOVES ME, SHE ME LOVES NOT.
THIS IS THE LOVE GAME.
SO!
Yet once again hope surfaces in the following:
WHAT'S YOUR CHOICE?
THE BULLET TO THE BRAIN
OR
THE WOMEN WHO DROVE YOU INSANE.
