Got out of the Army way,way before they introduced MRES but I think we did try the earlier version called LRRP rations in good old Vietnam,it was some kind of beef and macaroni concoction, pretty good as I recall, then again when your competitor was Ham and Limas………Welcome Home Brothers

LRRP’s were the best. Add water, put in canteen cup and use a heat tab. If you ran out of those, C4 worked well but was harder to light. I think my favorite was chili.

LRRP's were really pretty good and they were a lot easier to pack/hump. The indigenous rations were also pretty good--pour hot water into the bag of dehydrated rice and add a pouch of dried meat (hope it wasn't dog) or fish; also, conveniently stowed.

Favorite is a strong word. I was least disappointed by spaghetti or chicken ala king. I did love the "gorilla" cookies, but I'm almost positive that eating three of them in one day, two days in a row without any salad could result in a fatal case of constipation.
