Okay, the abbreviated version of this question got my attention: "Are Marine recruits still required to read"

Being a former squid, I'm not sure what the "Rifleman Dodd" is, but one of my best friends who happens to be a former Jar head showed me his initial entrance exam. He scored "top of his class" ha ha

GySgt John Olson - Thanks Gunny ! I did "google" it after I submitted my post and it's now on my "must read" list. I'll have to ask my Marine buddy if he has read it.

When did that start? The only "required reading" I remember were the knowledge books we were giving and told to read while in boot camp.

The low maintenance "cammies" were being issued to new marines in '01 or '02 if memory serves me right. This also includes the MOLLE system, doing away with ALICE. M4's or the non-polishing boots had not been implemented yet. I EAS'd in October of '02. I believe the no iron covers were brought in around '00.

I had a cover with a stiffener sewn in it while stationed in Okinawa in '98 though. That's what made it "no-iron". I just haven't seen MARPAT until I saw a Reserve Captain wearing a set in '03. That's also when I found out about the self defense evolution from LINE Training to MCMAP and different belts authorized to wear with the "diggies".

How would you iron those block covers?

In 1981 we didn't, at Parris Island anyway. What is this Rifleman Dodd you speak of?

Here is the summary. It is a very good read for those who haven't read it.

Never read that or heard of it. If it wasn't in the guidebook for Marines or the Holy Bible we didn't read it.

GySgt John Olson - I met General Gray at the airport in Jacksonville, NC. A few of us were flying out around the holidays. He came over and talked with us for a few minutes. He was in civilian attire which threw us a bit until he introduced himself and we all assumed the position. He put us at ease and talked for a few minutes.

He was not the commandant at the time. He might have either been the commanding general of Lejeune of the 2nd Mar Div at the time. He became commandant after I left active duty. I am aware of the commandants reading list but didn't know they had pushed that back into boot camp. I remember the stir when General Gray has his official portrait in utilities.

Are Marine recruits still required to read "The Rifleman Dodd" during boot?

When I went through in '04, we didn't. I read it in the fleet when they wanted us to read from the Commandant's List.

We all read it as well in the summer of 1999. Maybe the OIC of the training command required all recruits to read it during their time as the commander.

Since I wasn't a Marine I can not answer this post but I can say I read "Rifleman Dodd" but thought "The General" by CS Forester was a better read, just as an aside I can't remember reading anything during Basic, who had time what with memorizing my "General Orders", Chain of Command,Battle sight zero, the proper way to set up and display your War and Foot lockers, polishing boots and buckles ect, ect, ect and don't forget to tie the white towel on the bottom bunk rail if you drew KP ,Oh joy!

I'm glad that dummy is fired! He deserves it. He can claim 1st amendment but with "opinions" like that, he needs to do that on his own time. Not while he's on the clock, supposedly teaching. Some idiots don't know when to keep their mouths shut.

I don't remember it from Parris Island. I think I was on the Commandant's Reading List. That was a great asset to the Corps. It guided Marines who wanted to raise their professionalism and reputation.

LCpl Shane Couch I started Boot Camp in June 1968, and this was not on our reading list.

Geezzzzz, The only things I was allowed to read in MCRD way back in 63 was my "little red notebook", The Guidebook For Marines, the test papers placed in front of me and on rare occasions...very rare.. mail.

Not when I was on duty in PI. The big thing then was the Crucible.
