I just don't get Ben Carson. He speaks so mildly and peacefully in the debates. He's very religious and a very smart man. Then I read about him saying how giving up some of our torture techniques, is being too politically correct. I'm all for the torture the killers of our American people get. For what they do, there's not enough torture they should receive. I'm really proud of the guy for speaking up and making a statement about torturing those killers and he won't rule out waterboarding of terrorism suspects. We're at war folks. If Obama won't admit to that, there's a huge problem with him.
Anyway, and now the rest of the story.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WASHINGTON -- Famed neurosurgeon and Republican presidential hopeful Ben Carson wouldn't rule out torturing terrorism suspects on ABC's "This Week with George Stephanopoulos" Sunday.

Stephanopoulos asked Carson if he agreed with GOP candidate Donald Trump that the U.S. should resume waterboarding, an "enhanced interrogation technique" President Barack Obama discontinued in 2009.

"There's no such thing as political correctness when you're fighting an enemy who wants to destroy you," Carson said, "and I'm not one who's real big on telling the enemy on what we're going to do and what we're not going to do."

Carson also said he favored surveillance of mosques, essentially repeating something he said on Saturday.

"We should monitor anything -- mosque, church, school, you know, shopping center -- where there's a lot of radicalization going on," Carson said.

Why does anyone applaud this kind of ridiculous bravado? We already know that torture doesn't work, so the only reason we torture people is to punish them. Don't we have another justice system for that?

And everyone is ok with monitoring anywhere that radicalization may occur? Like mosques? Churches? Malls? Schools? I hear most radicalization occurs in the home, we should probably expand the NSA's monitoring that too!

Did we somehow just forget that whole Law of War thing? Was that just a "good idea" for everyone else, but not really applicable to US? Or maybe it doesn't count because the enemy doesn't have a real country? Is that really the big difference? Eddie Izzard would count them as good because they have a flag!

Can we really sit here with a straight face and say "We support the Constitution" and yet blatantly advocate for exactly the opposite of what the Constitution stands for? Muslim internment camps? Special ID cards? Tracking? Osama may be dead, but there is no question that he absolutely achieved his objective. The United States is no longer the land of the free or the home of the brave - we've let ourselves become the land of security theater and the home of the internet tough guy.

1) Torture doesn't work.
2) It's against the $^& (* law. Our Law. International Law. Treaties that we have agreed to. Let's not BS around the issue here. It's $^*%& wrong.

It's not an effective tool. Why the hell would we use a tool that isn't effective, unless it is for some perverse sort of revenge?

https://fas.org/irp/doddir/army/fm34-52.pdf

We're #%^&$*% better than that.

It doesn't work, and it's wrong. Don't do it. How hard is that to understand?!? It's in the FM and has been for 40~ years. It's been codified in Law for longer than that.

This isn't a case of "sometimes you need to break someone's fingers to find out where the nukes are." That's what Sodium thiopental is for. If it's really a big deal, get a damn warrant, and inject the $*&%& with "truth serum."

SGT (Join to see) - It's hard to calm down, when we start talking openly about allowing Torture. Calling it "enhanced interrogation" or some other legalese name doesn't change what it is. Doesn't make it right.

It's hard to calm down when we have main stream frontrunners for the Presidential election talking about registering people based on Religious preference.

This kind of talk is what makes us look like barbarians. The only way we can maintain the moral highground to actually use force where necessary in the rest of the world is if we are beyond reproach when we do use force.

Sgt Aaron Kennedy, MS, I'm totally against registering anyone for their religious preference. That sounds familiar and in not a good way. We're not going to regress back to Hitler days, and any candidate pushing for that isn't someone I want to be POTUS. Carson is spouting off about something he doesn't know about, and doesn't understand the ramifications if the treaties were broken. If this statement came from Trump I might be able to understand why, considering the source. But, from Carson?

SGT (Join to see) The second one was from Mr. Trump. The Torture comments from Dr. Carson. Both piss me off to the point of "equalness" (I can't get more pissed off). Dr. Carson has however publicly stated religion should be a considered factor for "electability," which is counter to the Constitution (Art6).

This election cycle is really scaring me. We're getting radicals that don't understand the very simple Constitution. It's four pages long. What's worse is the support of the People, who should be shouting down these radicals for even suggesting some of these concepts. That's changing my fear into outright anger. The People are the oversight for the Government... and it they aren't capable of spotting basic "wrongness" what hope do we have. Not political disagreement things, but flat out wrongness. That's what is worrying me.

Sgt Aaron Kennedy, MS, What worries me is voters voting for anyone, no matter their qualifications, just to put someone in they think will counter the mistakes Obama has made. I really don't like any of the candidates. I just can't imagine Trump or Clinton running our country. One is egotistical, the other one is a liar. I hate what's going on. For my first time, I'm extremely worried about the future of our country.

There's just that small detail where it doesn't work and erodes our standing in the international community while bolstering the terrorists' claims about our willingness to disregard our own morals and treaties. But, yeah, sure, let's do it for the sake of enjoying the enemy's suffering. There's nothing "PC" about not torturing people (I honestly think Conservatives don't actually know what that term means) when it's been proven to yield unreliable information.

Ben Carson thinks giving up certain torture techniques would be too PC.

This is why I hate the primaries. He's shifting right and playing political word games to grab the primary nomination. To me, all he's showing is that he may not be a professional politician, but he'll fit in just fine with the rest of them.

SGT (Join to see) - Sergeant; I'm not quite sure how it is "PC" for the government not to do things which it has charged, tried, and convicted people (including Americans) for doing in the past. Of course Dr. Carson wasn't born when the US government convicted a member of the IJA of "torture" (he "waterboarded" American prisoners of war) and sentenced him to 15 years in jail so his lack of understanding is quite understandable (as is his reluctance to talk about the six malpractice lawsuits he has been the defendant in).

COL Ted Mc, The more Carson opens up, the more I don't understand where he is coming from, or who gave him something to talk about he knows nothing about. He's becoming even more a politician the more I listen to him. Haven't heard about the malpractice lawsuits, but the other candidates have the same amount or even worse skeletons in the closet, Republican or Democrat.

SGT (Join to see) - Sergeant; The things that scared me the most about the current race for the Presidency of the United States of America were Messrs. Trump and Carson.

I suspect that I can (pretty much) stop worrying about Mr. Carson - partly because I suspect that the movers and shakers in the Republican Party are having sufficient nightmares about the result of him having a one-on-one debate with Ms. Clinton should he secure the Republican nomination. (On the other hand, it might be as much fun as the back seat of a '56 Chevy on a Saturday night at the submarine races.)

COL Ted Mc, They scare me too. If either would be elected as POTUS, the Washington branches of government, would run over them like a freight train. I can just visualize Trump or Carson talking to world leaders. It wouldn't be pretty.

It funny how there is all this talk about torture (judicial corporal punishment) being un-American -

George Washington strongly advocated and utilized JCP in the Continental Army, with due process protection, obtaining in 1776 authority from the Continental Congress to impose 100 lashes, more than the previous limit of 39.

Thomas Jefferson was for the castration for men guilty of rape, polygamy or sodomy, and a minimum half-inch hole bored in the nose cartilage of women convicted of sex crimes.

Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt as well advocated JCP as punishment for wife-beating.
The practice of JCP was in deterrence, reform and good old fashioned vengeance. While JCP made its quite exit from the US in 1957 corporal punishment involved the infliction of pain, and in some circumstances branding, mutilation etc. and amounted to what would be defined as torture.

So the use of torture was at one time very central to the US.

Regardless our history one of the top countries in the world in many ways, Singapore uses corporal punishment. Who ever thought stern discipline would result in such a ruly and productive society.

Sounds like Singapore is the place to live. Except if too many Americans move there,I'm pretty sure their murder rate will increase.

COL Ted Mc, Roger that. When I was in Tokyo on R&R, it was the same way as Singapore. Some construction workers were building a cross over in downtown Tokyo. It looked like construction wprk usually looks but at the end of the day all equipment and debris was removed and you couldn't tell there was construction going on. It amazed me.
