So I was looking at a website and building my ribbon rack for a shadow box, and noticed all these commemorative medals....this is something I haven't seen before. What is the point of these? They aren't something that are awarded, that I'm aware of. Can anyone enlighten me?

I think they are stupid and just a money making scheme. Why do I need a medal to commemorate and actual medal or ribbon that I already have. But I will say I feel that the Cold War Service Medal should be a real medal.

There is no cold war medal but here is a cold War certificate which I was issued.

We have members of Congress that are pushing for the Cold War Medal. Right now there is another big push to get it passed. I am not sure of the commemorative medals, only Medals that show that you took part in.

SMSgt Lawrence McCarter - There are a few cold war medals, but they're all commemorative. I found one of them here ... https://assets.medalsofamerica.com/media/catalog/product/cache/8284e566d02a985497925dd331e33492/f/2/f233.png

I don't think they're stupid. I retired from the USMC and got initiated as a Shellback for crossing the Equator in the Indian ocean. I got certificates to prove it. I can't wear the Navy Shellback ribbon or medals on my uniform but I'm proud to display them.

It's a money making scheme for the vendors that sell them, and a way for those who finish their careers with little eye candy to beef up their egos. Not really sure that there is a good reason to buy anything other than what I've earned...

Also as to Commemorate Medals, firstly You cannot wear them on a Military uniform ever, they are not authorized for that purpose. I suppose You could wear them on Your pajamas and feel like a big shot in Your dreams. I wouldn't waste My money on them.

There are those ribbons awarded, by a few branches of service, qualification levels of marksmanship with weapons that you would think simply qualify them to Be In Service. There are Many awards issued by branches of service, other than the Army, that simply falls within the description of Doing Your Duty.

I served for 10 years in our Reserves... I don't qualify for our 12-year decoration, so I proudly wear my regimental commemorative medal. My daughter has the Queen's Diamomd Jubilee Medal and wears her medal with honour for her community service.
