The Connecticut Supreme Court on Thursday ruled the state's death penalty is unconstitutional. The deeply divided court's 4-3 ruling will affect the 11 inmates currently on the state's death row.

Lawmakers repealed the state's death penalty in 2012, but stipulated it only applied to future crimes. Plaintiffs in Thursday's case had argued the 2012 ban should also extend to prisoners already on death row.

The Supreme Court agreed to take up the law's prospective issue when it granted a request by Eduardo Santiago, whose death sentence was overturned two months after the repeal took effect. (Connecticut Department of Corrections)

SGT (Join to see) in the U.S, the death penalty does not seem to be much of a deterrent. Additionally, far too many people, mostly men, are sentenced to death after being convicted and eventually it is proven that they are in fact innocent. So I do not have a law degree and cannot address the death penalty's constitutionality, but I think it is not worth having.

SGT (Join to see) State Sanctioned Murder is still Murder, Even if it is used on a Murderer it is still Murder. Not Often that I'm Complete Agreement with the Catholic Church but in this Case I am.

I fully respect your opinion and the basis upon which you reached it. Irrespective of my earlier comment I do not relish executions either. For that reason alone comes my desire for executions to be public. In this country everything and everyone have become so "sensitive" that they are protected from too much. I believe the horrible reality of execution (especially by hanging) would be a deterrant to butt-holes like that kid in FL who murdered 17 children and adults. Everyone is deeply impressed by what they see especially when it is real. I believe lives would be saved were the realities of execution more generally known. With that said, would you still feel the same if victim was someone you loved? Revenge is not a sufficient reason to execute someone, but it certainly something to give one pause.

I respect the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. In this case however, the sense in which I use the word respect is directed towards you. I also respect the teachings of the Holy Eastern Orthodox Catholic and Apostolic Church and those members who order their lives in accord with the Church.

Why should we support these animals for the rest of their natural lives. End it now! Liberal judges have never had someone taken from them!

Right now it appears there is no justice- Murderers can spend 10-15 yrs in jail and get out, or life in prison at our expense- earning college degree's, filing endless appeals. Meanwhile their victim's family has to look at any empty place in their house for holidays, etc.

The death penalty should only be used in cases where DNA evidence corroborates or in a case like the Boston bombing. Other than that, no. There have been way too many documented cases of innocent people being on death row, some after the fact! Also the death penalty has been shown to provide no deterrence value and often is more expensive than life in jail with the extended appeals process. The death penalty is necessary but it needs to be a rare occurrence... Not like Texas!

LTJG (Join to see), Texas executes more felons than any other state, but look at the data on states that execute and those that don't. Oklahoma isn't far behind Texas. It keeps our country more safe by execution. So, in my opinion, if it's wrong in Texas, which haven't executed more wrongful executions than any other state, it's wrong in all states. Tell me, how are we going to house all of those felons who deserve the death penalty, but are sentenced to life in prison? There are many felons that have dodged the death penalty, when they deserved it.
A map showing the use of the death penalty in the United States.
Green-State does not use the death penalty.
Red-State uses the death penalty.

I believe in the death penalty for this reason, I was on AD in FT. Hood, Tx. July/ August 1991 when they had the Lubby’s killer. Me and a friend, another soldier from 1st CAV almost went in there to eat.

I will never forget that, the people lost there lives just to sit and eat for lunch. Now we “COUNTRY” is lock in a LEGAL or LEGISLATIVE Igbo with NRA, that show not be. I say where is the common sense to this, we should be able to say if you are deamed sain, then Government has the right to take life. I also look to the Bible.

LTJG Cory Hauptman I worked with the Philadelphia Police on a homicide case where I had warned the victim that her killer would "be the death of her" she did not listen and he murdered her when the homicide detectives went to interview him he immediately confessed!!!

I fully support the death penalty. My only issue with it is the people on death row spent too much time and waste too much tax payer money. I say increase it and speed it up. If more state followed suit with the death penalty I seriously believe crimes that warrant it would drop. Show these guys we mean business about it
