Hopefully 2017 will bring with it a healthy cynicism towards unsourced and uninformed opinion posing as "news" and will allow sound and legal public policy and private development to move forward. Did "Fake News" play a role in the Dakota Access Decision? Comments please.

"Fake News" appears to be a growing phenomenon in our culture of internet - I have to have everything NOW without regard for fact, truth, or relevance - with no end in sight. People of all types gravitate towards their belief of accuracy rather than factual accuracy. Unfortunately, there is a huge difference between the two. Honest, fact checked, researched, and accurate take a back seat to ideology, slant, taint, skew, and I have to get it out there first.
It behooves us all to filter our own intake, spend the time to look at all sides of an issue, and realize that the true factual answer lies somewhere in between all the news we consume. Trusting ANY news source is not an option anymore - it seems every outlet has an agenda it desires to push so now we are left to skeptically sift through the dregs of information to filter out the facts as best we can.
The majority of us do not have the extra time to spend sifting and there in lies the never-ending cycle of consumption.

Back in the 50's the CIA created the term "Conspiracy Theory" to counter any oppositional speak against the Government......Is "Fake News" the new "Conspiracy Theory"...? Because as "Doc" stated, It is all to some degree "Fake" .....News-fo-tainment

I blame the 24 hour news cycle. 'Fake' news was a form of entertainment back in the day. Weekly World News anyone?

Since there isn't 'interesting' news happening 24 hours a day, the news channels had to fill the void with opinion shows. This of course is what gave us Bill O and Rachel M. Opinions aren't usually facts and the cites and quotes are easily rolled up into a meme and distributed in 144 characters or less.
Combine that with a wonderful newsfeed algorithm that tailors what you see to your interests and you have a real hot mess.

I had to do some research to figure out which Dakota Access Decision this question referred to SP5 Mark Kuzinski. I realize it was not based on the Dakota Indian uprisings of the 19th century when fake news as less likely but inaccurate anecdotal "news" sometimes was pushed as news.
I think the question is focused on the US Army Corps of Engineers plan to build a pipeline across the Missouri River. The resistance reminds me of the movie Little Big Man except they became too broad based.
Emotion and misinformation certainly influenced many of the protesters who were worked up because Dakota Indian burial grounds were along the path of a proposes route.

Fake news has always been prevalent. Government sponsored fake news is called propaganda. There are just more casual outlets for it now vs. 30 years ago. Those newer outlets have little to no editing, fact checking, etc. But then again, the long running rags out there have diluted their reporting and editorial standards greatly. "Remember the Maine!"

I know I am old, but, I truly believe satire news and news site that just make up news ought to have a disclaimer saying that their stories are just stories not real happenings.

In the age of the internet too many take the fake stuff and run with it.

The emotional and uncritical view taken by the media in this instance carried the day - until the next administration takes over and reverses the decision.
