Now I know what it feels like to have people tell you they are thankful to us and too many times I see a false modesty. Take it from a veteran who was not welcomed before that we do deserve some kind of validation.

In your more elderly years you WILL reflect and over time I have come to appreciate other older veterans. Some here have a very good grasp of leadership and those pearls of wisdom should not go unheeded and this includes veterans both older and younger than myself.

As for myself, I do appreciate the kind words. Do I consider myself a hero? No, but that is a natural reaction to being put on the spot.

That depends on who you are asking the question to. I don't consider myself a hero but I would say that the guys that were on the front lines are the heroes. However ask most if not all veterans who have served on the front lines be it in the air, land or at sea and they will probably say that that the heroes are the ones that didn't make it.

I don't consider myself a hero, but all the men and women who are serving and have served in the past and present is my hero.

I don't consider myself a hero although my nephews and nieces do. Happy to serve a great nation!

No sir I do not. Do I consider myself a Patriot, a Defender of Freedom, a Citizen who has stood up to be counted?

And if you ask any "true" hero, they will tell you that they are not.

And, I will say thank you to them.

In my opinion, anyone who picks up a rifle to defend this nation is heroic in stature.

I am not a hero. Hero is reserved for those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. I am very proud to say I served with those heroes.

Very few in this country even know what it means to serve...

I'm just a guy who tries his best and gives his all, and I do my job and do it well. If that makes me a hero, so be it, but if it doesn't, that's ok too.

SPC Moniz... just keeping on doing what you are doing now. You may be a hero to your loved ones or younger troops who are impressionable.

I refer to Patton - "The thing to do in being a hero is to make the other guy a hero so he can die for his country!"

The real hero's are the ones that don't make it back and their families. I say the families because I know it's very hard for them and they still carry on.

I certainly do not think I deserve anything! In fact, my response to the question of "How are you?" is "Better than I deserve". :-)

Heck, we don't deserve God's grace and mercy, but he offers it to us freely - far be it for me to think I deserve such a thing - or anything else for that matter.

I am just thankful that He gave me a little influence to use for a short time (30+ years) and now it's gone. I did my best to use it wisely, but I don't consider any of that worthy of the title - Hero.

I am more than grateful to the many men and women who have served before me - I think of them everytime I see the American Flag.

It is a title that is not self imposed. It is a title given by others.

You cannot choose to be a hero you are chosen.

We took in 150 casualties during my 6 months downrange. Those are the heroes. I was just doing my job.

Indeed and most people are somewhat embarrassed by the term. It is like bragging and attention that is unwanted and uncomfortable for the vet.
