TSgt Joshua Copeland, the answer is no. However, I still have the original dog tags that I was issued after I reported to the reception station at Fort Jackson on 28OCT69!
SFC William Farrell, in other correspondence, we talked about liking old things. I keep everything!

Issued in Boot Camp 1957, lost them 1958 after being assigned to my first boat (submarine). The purpose is meaningless when you are at the bottom of the ocean.

Completely true, MCPO Roger Collins! Fortunately though, for you, your family and the RP community, you’re still topside!

LTC Stephen C. - My sister just mailed us some old photos and such. My twin brother says to me it cost Jean $24 to mail stuff to him and she could have just waited til she saw him. I said I got a couple photos. He says I guess she considers me the family historian/caretaker! He's just a pick rat as evidenced by this. Him and I both paid our way to Nam but I have no idea where mine is!

I not only wear mine everyday (not just because of "new" rules), I spot check my Soldiers...professionalism begins with NCOs doing what's right.

For the 5 years I called Fort Drum my home, I never took them off unless SOP required me to do so. Even now, 20 years since I left my home at the Triple Duece, I still do unless I absolutely have to remove them. Deeds Not Words!

SGM Quick, off topic, but if you could, can you relay to my brothers in the Triple Deuce I still remember them and pray for their safety every night? DEEDS NOT WORDS! God bless and may you all stay safe...

I don't know if you consider this a comment, but I am a director of nursing at a nursing facility and have veterans that we take care of. Some wear dog tags, some don't, but I have one that I would like some facts about dog tags to give to my staff. He has stated that he doesn't "feel whole" if his dog tags are not around his neck, but I have one staff member that insists on taking his tags off during the night due to her concern that he will choke himself. Is there someplace you might be able to refer me to to locate particular policy or procedure regarding the wearing of tags, or is it strictly serviceman choice? I would appreciate any assistance you are able to provide, and can be reached most easily at [login to see] . Thank-you for all that you have provided to myself, and my family, with your service!

You can't lose something you're always wearing. Well, it's a lot HARDER to lose something you're always wearing. Unless my 3 year old wants to play "daddy" then he puts them on and runs around the house with my tags and Camelbak.

As a motorcycle rider, I wear them everyday. They are just one more way to be ID'd.

Agree TSgt Joshua Copeland the same reason I wear one and have the other attached to my riding vest.

I would recommend the avenue of the "commander's discretion." The safety SOP for any activity works on dangerous voltages (TB 385-4 defines this as 25V DC or higher) should include a paragraph on "Wear of PPE, Issued Uniform Items, and Personal Accessories/Jewelry."
My personal recommendation is as follows "All personnel performing duties in this area will be briefed on safety requirements. They will also remove all jewelry, necklaces, identification tags, or any other accessories that may conduct current."

1LT (Join to see) - That's actually the first briefing I give my 94Fs before the start of any work in our C&E Shop. It's always a little funny cause someone forgets to take something off and they get smoked for it.
SSG(P) (Join to see) - I used to be a Yeoman in the Navy, pretty much equivalent to the S-1 in the Army. One of my responsibilities was to update regulations that were out of date in our library at the unit.

Being that I work on equipment with high voltage, I never have them around my neck. But, they are always on me. Hooked around my belt loop and stuffed in my back pocket.

WO1 C.J. Scheurenbrand which is where I prefer to wear them. Around my neck makes me feel claustrophobic.

While I was active, I wore them daily. At CENTCOM, I helped make tags for some that were going to the AOR. I took the opportunity to make a phony allergy tag that indicated that I was allergic to heat, sand, NBC gear, and Iraqis. When I went over I got chewed out when a dog tag check was made and they didn't see the humor in it.

That is awesome.
Reminds me of when I was getting out, and my 1SG and commander asked me what I was planning on doing after getting out. I jokingly told them I was going to sell drugs.
They didnt think it was funny either. I laugh about it now though.

I left the military in 2008. In the 1970's during basic combat training, advanced individual training and my unit assignment and during 1980's while assigned to units or in schools I generally wore my dog tags. I didn't wear them much after about 1991.
Last year the local sheriff's deputies confiscated my P-38 can opener which seems to be considered a weapon.
After that I went to my lock box and found a set of my dog tags with the original chain and attached them to my key ring with another P-38 can opener. I carry my dogs tags in my pocket as a general rule now. The dog tags plus my VA Disability ID are useful for connecting me as a veteran.
I am thankful I had two P-38's from the C-ration days. That little tool has been useful as a can opener, flat tip screwdriver, etc.

LTC Stephen F. Them p-38's are not so friendly dangling from the chain of ones dog tags. I kept mine in my pocket on a key chain

Stephen I did not wear them much other than for Airborne operations and normally on jumps I kept them in my pocket. Even though I did not wear them I had a St Michael on them, I thought that was cool.

I think you forgot one use for the P-38, using it to clean under your finger nails. Lol
After the Army, I really didn't ware my Dog Tags anymore, and just kept it in the dresser drawer collection of things.
When my youngest turned 18, I gave it to her, which she wares it in memory of me, the tag even has a date scratched on it in the early 70's. I wanted her to remember me by that, I served proudly for our country.
As far as my P-38, I didn't give it to her, but showed her what it was for, and how useful it was. Still today, I keep it my dresser drawer collection, with my ribbons and blood wings, where it will say until I'm dead and gone.
When I do pick it up and look at it, I see many memories of the great bunch of guys that I served with.
