I know that while I was stationed in Germany for 7 years I was traveling nearly every weekend and now that I'm retired and living Stateside, I really miss all the travel, who else feels the same?

I lived in Japan for 13 of my 26 years of active service. Not only do I miss it but my family misses it as well.

Miss the travel opportunities, well that's what I thought it was but it is not the travel opportunities that I miss!

I retired after 24 years in the Navy. Had some really great assignments. After retiring in 2006 got a job at the VA. Something was missing! What? Has to do with the question I posted. Why do veterans do high risk activities after or during active duty. I did answer the question posed by a VA regional director at a town Hall meeting. I stated because we/I trained them that way. I was looked at like a one eyed monster. His only rely was who is that. Funny part was I waited for one of the So-called professionals in that field to answer. After they just sat their. I was like I know the answer. Can tell not a one of them know what I was talking about so I just stopped after my comment. I miss the getting ready for the operation more than the travel. The multi tasking every day with a sense of agency and purpose. Then one comes home and a cerebration. That's the short version of what I miss the most.

I was only active duty for four years and was stationed over in Germany for two of those years, but I was single back then. I enjoyed getting the chance to see that part of the world and (looking back on it) I realize how precious that opportunity was. I have always wished I could afford to take my wife on an extended tour of Europe, but it just isn't the same now.
After my time in the Army, I have worked for the Navy as a civilian since 1999 and up until 2009 I traveled extensively, but for short trips where my family could not come along. I did enjoy that travel also, but mostly I enjoyed being paid to go to those places.
If I could do it all again, I think would stay in the military to be stationed in more places and have time to explore like I did when I lived in Germany those years.

How many of you that were overseas for an extended period and have retired or separated miss the travel opportunities?

Yeah. I still travel when I can, but time and money available seldom coincide. On the plus side, when I travel now, I am generally not going someplace where I can expect to be shot at.

I miss Germany for sure, even more so after working with German MPs on my last deployment.

I spent two years in Korea, and have gone back every year for the last twenty years. Most likely, I'll eventually retire there.

I definitely miss it. Don't forget though for those that are still on active duty, reservists or retired, the military space available flights are one of the best benefits we have and can make traveling overseas with your family affordable. You need to do some research in advance to find out where to go for the best chance to get a flight where you want to visit and be flexible. For instance, you may not be able to get a flight direct to Italy, but you could fly to Germany and take an inexpensive train ride through the beautiful Swiss alps to get there instead...

Well why aren't you still traveling? You can use the patriot express and fly to most countries. Go work as an English teacher overseas. They really need them in Korea and they pay for your housing too. You can teach in Cambodia, Vietnam, Europe. If you're not traveling it's not because you can't... its because you won't.
