In October 1944, in the depths of World War II, a young man from Baltimore named Robert Rubenstein dropped out of high school and, with his mother’s permission, enlisted in the Marine Corps. He was 17.
Rubenstein was assigned to a machine gun crew, served on the battleship USS Tennessee and survived the war. He came home to Baltimore, raised a family and was always proud of being a Marine.
On Wednesday, his son, David, the billionaire philanthropist, announced that he is donating $5.37 million to refurbish the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial, the 100-ton bronze sculpture of the flag-raising at Iwo Jima during the war.

GySgt Wayne A. Ekblad, we may have discussed this on another thread, but The Evening Parade at 8th and I is another Marine Corps spectacular that should be considered mandatory when in D.C.

There were two photographers that day. The first one took pictures of both flag raisings. The second photographer walked up as the second flag went up, and took the picture that became an iconic picture.

Color footage back in WWII was not unheard of but it was not the standard.

The second photographer took a beating over the picture because he was accused of staging the shot.

Television and the internet does not do the salute justice. I say this because I remember when I went to go see it for the first time, I was FLOORED and in awe of how big it actually was. Love that monument

I keep saying I should just move down to the DC area because I could spend every waking moment between the memorials and the Smithsonian. Yes, I've been there a few times, its just awesome!!

I've been there a few times over the years. The most memorable was when I took by then 15 year old son to see it. There was a veteran of the battle there and he spent time talking with my son about what he did on Iwo, when and how he was wounded, evacuated and a little about the history of the memorial. It was a fantastic visit for sure.
