If being a Marine is so awesome (I am the son of 2 Marines), why is it that there are soooo many Marines that join the Army and Air Force?

During my previous life as a 1SG before my USAR unit was deactivated, I had two Marine platoon sergeants. I couldn't ask for better soldiers. They were motivated, in excellent physical shape and the troops respected them. I wish I had four more.

Some of them transfer to the NG because there isn't really a Marine equivalent. I have about 3(4?) Marines in my unit

My uncle went to basic at Ft. Dix, where he got some disease(chronic pneumonia?) that forced him to be discharged. And nope I didn't have to go to Baltimore, though the Maryland NG is part of the 28th ID(PA NG). Normally they don't have guard units deploy out the state for State Active Duty Missions, though I did go to NYC for Hurricane Sandy. Sounds like you had quite the career. There was rumors going around my unit that we might have split deployment to Germany and then Saudi Arabia, but nothing for 'stan.

Sandy was a miserable time. Those tents sucked an no heaters. It took the almost a week for them to get us showers.

SPC (Join to see) - They, the Marines, are probably happy they are not in the AF and not letting on. In the Army they are at least legs and have weapons. I have known many AF veterans who can't discuss 556, 302, 762, 322, 45, without thinking one is giving them something do with computer code. I have AF in my family and they took advantage of the AF training as did my AF friends. I, on the other hand, like to shoot and am glad I got to play with the firearms. A Marine is leg first just as the Soldier is. There is no front line meaning everywhere is a front line is what i was taught.

I can see the Air Force. But the Army? Really? Worst service of them all and I was in all four.

Having been a Marine NCO with two tours in Vietnam and an 05 in the Air Force, I left the Marines to go back to school. I had been injured in the Marines and could not pass the physical requirement for my previous MOS, and the Air Force offered me a commission based on my college and past Marine Corps experience. So there are many reasons. But unless you have done both you will never truly understand. I think it is so individual that there is no single answer. After both the Air Force was really different from the Marines. I am the proud father of an Army Sgt First Class. My opinion is that we all served and should be pround of that. We should all celebrate each other, we all have different missions.....

Spent 10 years active (Army), 12 in the (Army) guard. Had many soldiers that were ex marines (oops sorry... former). Although they were excellent soldiers, they still walked around like they were better and could not let go of their marine corps heritage. Kept trying to bring their traditions in the guard. When I called them "ex-marines" they would demand "former marine". So I responded with "so you are a quiter" and "no longer wanted to be in the marines"? Conversation general ended there.

Hello..I’m a former Marine and I was not Force Recon or Recon for that matter...as a matter of fact I’m the son of a career Marine so I was born on a Marine Corps base and lived on many and I’ve never and mean not once in my 47 years of life met a Marine that has introduced himself or herself that way...they all simply say they’re Marines!

Finding something wrong for the sake of finding it.

It was intentional. Although the Army requires us to spell soldier with a capitol "S" in official documents, meh. I am proud of my time that I put on the UNI (whether Active or Guard through 22yrs) yet, I'm not gonna get my "head wrapped around" or "bent out of shape" cause you didn't capitalize my first name or incorrectly pronounced it.

1stLt Prioleau Alexander My DOWN VOTE is due to your unprofessional demeaning of the Army’s Rangers.

Rslly Point is a diverse community. We all have our burdens to live with. We live with them and do attempt to foist those burdens or failures onto other services.

My answer is purely what we would call hearsay TSgt Joshua Copeland. I learned a lot about this from my current SGM, who started his career as a Marine, and was even a member of the Marine Silent Drill Team. He ETS'd, and then wanted to come back, but the Marines were not hiring, so he joined the Army. He has told me (A) the Marines rarely take back prior service Marines, so they end up going to other branches, and (B) he also believes the Marines are focused more than other branches on recruits staying only one term. He believes they, more than any other branch, use and lose a lot of young folks. I think the answer is, they generally don't take prior service back. I will ask a recruiter and see what he says.

I served 5 yrs Marine Infantry then went Marine Reserve for 2, then had a lapse of 1 yr. When I went back to the prior service recruiter I could have left in a week and been back in an Infantry unit. But I qualified for a Lateral move so I changed jobs and had to wait 6 months. Having said that, I was one of three prior service Marines taken back in that month out of 27 that applied in that office.

Ive been out of the Marines for 4 years and wanted to get back in the beloved Corp, so I talked to a Marine recruiter a few months ago to get back in, but the wait would be a minimal of 6 months, would have to go in front of a board and tell them why I wanted to go back in, and a bunch of other bullshit I had to do. So with that being said I went and talked to an army recruiter and told me I could be shipping out in a few weeks. Getting all the paper work together now and that's one reason why prior service Marines go into the Army.

I am currently an Army SGM with prior USMC service. My experience is very similar to your SGM's. The Corps will always be a part of me but it was more than happy to let me stay civilian when I wanted back in. So we both moved on. While I sometimes miss the Corps, I don't regret my choice to join the Army. The opportunities and career that I've enjoyed could not be replicated in any other service.

A lot of people don't know this, but when you join the corps they give you a standard issue lobotomy and hold your brain until you leave service. Now unfortunately its not a perfect system as a Marine conducts the surgery and, well his brains been cut out as well so he doesn't always get the whole thing. This can cause unauthorized brain cell regeneration (punishable by UCMJ under code ID-10-T) but if a marine gets lucky and isn't caught he often ops to join a force that looks favorable on freer thought. :) love yall devil dogs though!

I walked into the Army recruiting station about four months after EASing from the Marine Corps. I had my "I love me book" which seemed to blow the Army recruiter away. Basic things I expected and was used to being an everyday thing in the Corps were suddenly praised. I was blown away at how I was treated. It was like I was a person. An unfamiliar feeling after eight years of Marine Crops infantry. I have a lot of friends I served with that joined Army and told me it was "So much easier, dude. The responsibilities we had in the Corps as E-3 through E-5 are things E-7's and up do in the Army." The entire experience blew me away. If my divorce was final, I'd be a freakin Soldier right now lol
