More often than not, motivated like minded individuals can help pull you out of the proverbial funk.

As long as the encounter is with someone of a like mind. I don't even mind if the discussion is at least with someone who s still looking for themselves or answers. However, I have run into hardliners on here that have frustrated me. While the those who lack compassion are few, when they strike it hurts. Sometimes it hurts worse because we believe they have shared our experiences and still refuse to see what we go through.

CPT (Join to see) you are one of the people that I would hate to see back off. Your posts are always well thought out, balanced, and on point.

Thanks SGT Richard H.! CPT John Hermida I am happy to have thoughtful debate like CW2 Joseph Evans described. I didn't want to call any specific person out because I honestly do believe that the people doing it really think that they are communicating appropriately. However, I do want to give my opinion on the examples you gave. The first on is *absolutely* what I am talking about. The opinion of the poster is in the question. The entire intent of the post was to bash Hillary Clinton, not provide a platform for discussion. On the other hand, the Pro-life, pro-choice thread did create an opportunity for people to discuss opposing opinions. I don't think topics should be shut down just for being controversial. But, I don't enjoy threads that are entirely intended to stump for/against a single viewpoint. At the same time, I don't get to say what stays and goes on RP...other than my own participation.

I hope none of my topics of conversations/discussions has bothered you CPT (Join to see) because Ma'am I have enjoyed your thought out insightful responses. And we on RP need your wisdom and advice.

CPT John Hermida Amen. Unfortunately, I was sucked into one of those. I know better, too. CPT (Join to see) 100% agree. Discussion is what makes this a great site. Zero-sum game approaches to those discussions, however, don't.

Extremely therapeutic. There is a lot that goes on in the mind of a military person or vet that is only understood by the same. This helps fill those gaps for me.

PO3 Shaun Taylor, I agree that when we learn from each other and embrace the suck it doesn't seem so bad.

Interacting on RP with like minded individuals is somewhat therapeutic, anyone else have the same experience?

It is refreshing to say the least. You get to interact with some very unique people out there. I have come to view some here as friends as I have met some and can tell you some of their traits. I really hope RP is able to grow and spread out among all the services.

Plus, I am information junkie. I have now added this to one of my favorite sources of information.

1LT Eric Rosa, I agree the amount of experience and information that RP is very helpful. I feel that I've been able to grow as a leader by seeing post from junior Soldiers and watching the responses from the leaders.

I appriciated the open honest communication with out the imature bashing that you can see on other social media sights. Not that we can't be a little sarcastic at times...

I thank Rally Point for its existence! It has been a huge help for me. I love the different discussions and personalities, though we see things from various perspectives, we have a similar root of understanding.

CPT Christopher Alexander, wish I had more thumbs to give...

MAJ (Join to see), couldn't agree more. In fact, I find it therapeutic interacting with those on RP regardless of their view. Some are absolutely set in their opinion (of course, we all get that way at times) while others are very open to having a discussion about topics.

Some of the best and most engaging discussions I've had on RP have been with those that don't agree with me, but are willing to engage in a civil discussion about why they have their view.

Definitely works for me, just wish the forum would have been there earlier in my career as to expand my knowledge base and network even sooner in life. While not giving up on active duty in the near term, I will utilize you all for the rest of my days!

CW5 Sam Baker, I wish this would have been around earlier in my career as well. The day to day interaction with different ranks, services and specialties definitely add a little more to my toolkit.

I am learning a lot from this website. It feels good to interact with officer and senior NCOs without having that lingering fear of getting in trouble or being shut down.

SGT(P) (Join to see) , thing is officers are men and women too, they all place their britches on one leg at a time. Their (our) rank affords certain privileges at times, but no where does that mean not to battlefield circulate and communicate with Soldiers.

There might be someone on RP who can put those pants on with one swoop, maybe MAJ Robert (Bob) Petrarca or another, but highly exaggerated if they lay claim!

For me, talking to other members of the military is like talking to other scientists - they "speak your language". I can't talk to anyone like I can talk to military members and scientists. What civilians would get, "I'm going TDY to BAMC so I need to deal w/ DTS, then if I PCS I need to check my BAH or seek a retention".

Being able to speak my mind here and not have to run everything through a "civilian filter" is definitely nice.
On top of that, there are things I can talk to you all about that I simply can't talk to civilians about because they have not had experiences like ours and are, in most cases, unable to relate.
In summary, yes, I feel it is therapeutic to be able to talk to you all here.
So...thank you to everyone who listens to me and everyone else who needs it.

SSG (Join to see) Apparently you've never dealt with PAO. I swear I spend half of every week trying to figure out what I can and cannot say as active duty.

And for anyone who doesn't get why I said that both military and science are different languages, here's the title of my PhD thesis paper:

Transmembrane domains of the syndecan family of growth factor coreceptors display a hierarchy of homotypic and heterotypic interactions
