From what I know they’ve never been under the DoD except during times of war. They were Dept of Transportation, and now they’re Homeland Security.

Will Boyd The Marine Corps is a branch of the military. It does however have close ties to the Navy, and the Department of the Navy oversees both service branches, each having its own autonomous leadership (Marine Corps has its Commandant, US Navy has its Chief of Naval Operations, both leaders are members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and both branches are under civilian oversight of the Secretary of the Navy.

Yes. Why wouldn't it? What kind of question is this? Hell a simple Google search could have answered this question rather than coming into a military forum and questioning the legitimacy of one branch or another.

It's not a troll question, it's a family member, probably very confused by the Navy/Corps relationship. The vast majority of Americans know nothing about the military. This wasn't an amused answer, it was rude, to a family member. Pretty messed up.

No. It's a troll question. If it's a family member question, then you ask family members, not complete strangers. Like I said, this could have easily been Google searched.

Short answer: Amphibious Corps of ground forces of US Navy. What other nations often refer to as Naval Infantry. Primary mission is to "seize and defend advanced naval bases".

Marine Corps Mission
The mission of the Marine Corps was set forth in the National Security Act of 1947 as amended (1952) and outlined in US Code collection § 5063. Historically, Marine Corps preparedness has been characterized by the phrase, "The First to Fight," and the mission of a Marine rifle squad is "To locate, close with, and destroy the enemy...There are the seven elements of the Marine Corps Mission.

1. Provide Fleet Marine Force with combined arms and supporting air components for service with the United States Fleet in the seizure or defense of advanced naval bases and for the conduct of such land operations as may be essential to the execution of naval campaign.

2. Provide detachments and organizations for service on armed vessels of the Navy and security detachments for the protection of naval property at naval Stations and bases.

3. Develop, in coordination with the Army, Navy, and Air Force, the doctrine, tactics, techniques, and equipment employed by landing forces in amphibious operations.

4. Provide Marine forces for airborne operations, in coordination with the Army, Navy, and Air Force, according to the doctrine established by the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

5. Develop, in coordination with the Army, Navy, and Air Force, the doctrine, procedures, and equipment for airborne operations.

6. Expand peacetime components to meet wartime needs according to the joint mobilization plans.

7. Perform such other duties as the President may direct.

CWO3 (Anonymous) Ah, generation Y... I never knew there was such a thing..... that is good.... I served before there was humor in uniform...

I suggested Will Boyd go navy (over ground pounders) because the Navy is a bit more relaxed in these matters and I made a hasty judgement that young Will will be hard to bend to the discipline required of people intent on eating dirt.... I imagined Will working hard to shine up the Captain's gig for a port that was still two days off.... That kind of expedient response... with coffee brewed fresh from the Bosuns locker fresh at hand... A man free to grumble whilst surrounded by the fresh breezes of a mighty ocean.....

CWO3 McIntosh, Sir; I have to question your answer.. "Amphibious Corps of ground forces of US Navy" Excellent answer.. only one problem, Congress of the United States does Not recognize the US Navy anymore.. They believe we are just some sort "party boat" .. Therefore, Congress has a hard time Understanding ANY BRANCH OF OUR MILITARY, or showing any respect for our Active, our Veterans, our retired.. Prerequisite for running for any political position of the Government.... 4 YEARS ACTIVE DUTY !!

Yes they are a branch of the armed services. However, they are not their own department. They fall under the department of the navy.

The US Marine Corps is an Armed Service. It is also part of the Department of the Navy headed by the Commandant of the Marine Corps. To my knowledge, it isn't a Branch like those in the Army, such as Infantry, Armor, etc.

That's what I was trying to say above Colonel. It's the sender's responsibility to make sure the proper message is sent. In radio comms brevity and clarity matter, and RP is similar. When calling for fire there is a huge difference between "say again" and "repeat". Saying "repeat" after advancing on the objective just fired upon equals fratricide, because as most know it means to fire the mission again. Wording does matter. If he should choose the USMC, I'd envision a steep learning curve at MCRD.
