So I'm walking back to my office building today (US Federal Court, Hartford CT) and there are a handful of protestors. One is carrying a sign "War is not the Answer". The majority of us are Veterans or active duty. Is war ever the answer? Why or why not.

War is not THE answer- but it is a strong arguement to those you disagree with to change their course of action. It should always be the last course of action- but brave hard men and women stand at the ready to ensure our way of life and national security are kept safe. War was still the answer to the aggression and murder of hundreds of thousands. The attack on Pearl Harbor (after which the Germans declared war on us) required us to act or to be steam rolled in the pacific. Do you think we could have negotiated the Germans and Japanese out of the territory they took and have them go back? Would it have been a good outcome to have the Nazis own Europe and eventually even topple the UK? Were we going to let Australia/New Zealand etc. fall to the Japanese too? That is where they were going next.
War is the answer sometimes. Not because we choose it but it chooses us. The option not to fight would bring more horrific outcomes than the fight. Would we wait for the Nazis and Japanese to consolidate their wins then invade the US and have to fight a stronger more aggressive enemy on our soil, in our home towns?
The problem with the people holding signs like this is they have never been in the crucible nor have they educated themselves on the history and the realities of war. That does not mean war is always the answer but there are times it is the best worst option.

Silly question. "Answer" would imply a question. What is the "Question"? There is none. War is an act of diplomacy (the profession, activity, or skill of managing international relations, typically by a country's representatives abroad). Most people think of war as a failure of diplomacy, but it is just another form of diplomacy, aggressive diplomacy, but still a "skill" of "managing" international relations. (If you can't talk them into it, force them into it) Even defense is aggressive diplomacy. (No, you can't force me and I'll use force to stop you from trying) Now, some may argue that they're merely using "answer" in the metaphorical sense of the word. Good luck with that. Then I'll respond using diplomacy in its metaphorical sense. Oh, wait. I already did that...
