During the opening ceremonies last night of Monday Night football I noticed that when the flag was brought out there were military members holding the flag. Majority were in their dress uniforms, but the Army was in its ACUs. In my opinion it did not look good and they looked very out of place. Then I went back and looked at some older pics and saw that the Army always wears cammies vs. dress uniform.

Doesn't some commander have a decision to make on what uniform to wear? Why wear your worse uniform to something like that? I thought they were dressed for casual Friday.

What are your thoughts for something that is televised like this?

I am brutally exhausted in our policy to allow public presence in ACUs. I firmly believe in traveling (PCS/TDY) ought to be in the ASU versus the ACU and if you don't want to wear your ASU, then civilian. The motto and slogan "Profession of Arms" only holds water if we look professional in public and I can assure you in my humble opinion a Marine traveling looks a whole lot better than a Soldier in ACUs.

I was stationed at Fort Myer where we never wore BDUs unless on midnight shift, so the beef that Blues (ASU) cannot be everyday wear will not pass with me. I am proud of the uniform and work diligently to wear it correct and with pride.

There, the old man syndrome is exposed!

The Army really should copy the Marine Corps by not allowing soldiers to wear ACU's when off duty or off base. It would go a long way towards, as you pointed out, maintaining a professional look. I don't know what the Army equivalent of the Service Bravos/Charlies is, but that should be the uniform for mission-related travel.

Class A/B are authorized for travel...but who wants to travel in those? Unless I HAVE to be in uniform, comfy clothes is where it's at.....

I do not know if it is disgust or jealousy, but while I was on Active Duty (and still to this day), when I see a service member out in town in their uniform of the day (i.e., ACU's, MARPAT, or Coveralls), basically anything other than Service Uniforms, it still gets under my skin. The working uniforms for every service are just that: Working Uniforms. They should not be displayed or worn out in the civilian world for any reason other than stopping to get gas or go to the bank.

Traveling CONUS in daily work uniform seems to have caught on after 9/11. As late as 1985 the reserve unit I was in traveled from San Diego to Minnesota, January, in Class A Greens. Travel in yrs after that was in civilian clothes. Traveled on group orders from Minnesota to San Diego (ironically, different units!) in February 2000 in civilian clothes. All my travel after that yr was in civilian clothes. I can understand traveling from 'theater' to CONUS in a duty uniform but don't see the need in and around CONUS. In CONUS travel should be civilian attire or ASU's! Unfortunately the Army no longer has a 'in between' uniform like the old Khaki's

The army seldom wears any dress uniforms. The culture of being an Army at wear lets soldier wear ACUs as a professional uniform. I don't like the practice. I hope the Army moves away from this mentality. Other branches like the MC and Navy wear their dress uniforms far more. An example of this is when a Navy ship disembarks from a port. The AF has worked so much with the Army they just mirror another.

Maybe if the AF quit spending so much money on stealth aircraft that they're going to use for a decade, if that, they'd be able to afford an upgrade to their dress uniform. And their duty uniform is pretty awful too.. Not trying to dog the AF btw. Just calling it like I see it.

They are doing their part to raise the funds to buy the stealths.

I agree with you Sir. The Army should move away from that practice. I am very proud of my Blues and the way they look. I was proud of my Green's as well.

Wait a second, are you saying that the Army has another uniform? I thought they came out of their momma's wearing their ACUs.... I went to WWE Raw this past Monday and lo and behold, ACUs all over the place. Riddle me this Army, are your junior ranks just sooooo hooah that they have thrown away any and all civilian clothing?

It is a WWE policy to let those in ACU get a free ticket so a lot of our Joes go in uniform to get a free show.

lol yeah you've been missing out; everytime they would come to Fort Bragg I would still pay to get front row seats, but I saw a couple of guys that came in ACU's get up to the 3rd row behind us. Its where ever they have seats and they will put you in the best seats as possible.

Nice to know, thanks for sharing, I had never heard of this before. What a great program; people may rag on "wrasslin" but they do a lot more for the community than many other organizations.

I would like to add that the Army has a hatred for their class A uniforms. Now I know I don't speak for everyone, but most people I know agree when I describe them as a uniform for a 3rd world dictator crossed with a mall rent-a-cop. Most people I have spoken to in other branches (I work in a joint environment every day) will openly state that their Class A uniform is more or less comfortable to move and sit in. The Army's is not. The only time it ever looks good and put together is when standing at the position of Attention. Any other position or at all relaxed and it immediately degrades the look. These uniforms are not comfortable either, so more often than not, if the army has a reason to not wear them, it's going to take it. It looks terrible when we wear our ACU's all over the place, because those are ugly as hell after one wash as well. The Army would love new uniforms that looked better, but we don't want to deal with having to buy all new uniforms ALL OVER AGAIN so soon. I think another change that won't make much sense is coming up for the Army uniform anyway.

When I was an Army recruiter I always wore my blue when the Marine recruiter was going to be present at a function because they always wore theirs and that was their only real selling point. Humorously candidates tend to choose their branch based on the uniform more times than not.
However if the Army blues are worn right and in my opinion with the belt I think the uniform looks very nice.

Wow, that belt does a lot for the Army dress blues. It should be a requirement because without it, the whole package seems underwhelming.

IMHO, everyone should be at the same uniform level. I agree with a lot that's been said about the "Army at war" theory but it's all about "uniformity". Without uniformity, the armed services won't know what to do. They'll be wandering through wilderness trying to answer the ultimate questions of, "What hip is your canteen supposed to be worn on?" and "Is the first aid pouch worn flap up or flap down?". They'll be as lost as a 2LT with a map and compass. On the bright side, at least no reflective belts were abused in the process.

And we will be wearing the ACUs everywhere.... forever! Based on the "Army at War" theory, this is the "War on Terror". And until all terror is wiped from the planet.... the war goes on!

LTC (Join to see) - I hope the Army considers the face of the Army to be combat and not Pentagon or the Color Guard (not that that is a bad thing) it's just that's the uniform that people see on TV.
Respectfully,
Larry

I watched it and the few I seen it was actually Airman in ABUs. My wife and I commented that it looked bad.

TSgt Joshua Copeland _ In general I agree with that but when I see the NAVY in camo gear one gets the sense of what they do. As opposed to the whites (which again that is awesome too) but seeing Navy and Air Force looking the part really matters. If we are trying to reach people to work in the command post or some mainly inside job, then the blues reflect that environment. IMHO
Respectfully,
Larry.

The picture in my profile is me at Rhein Mein AB on a TDY in 1977 or 78. Too long ago to remember especially at my age. That was a time when being in uniform was not hip. So, being a new SrA, I was proud just as I was proud in my blues with my yellow leadership rope.

TSgt Joshua Copeland - I worked in the CP during ORIs and we wore Vietnam-era fatigues. At LRAFB I actually wore the dark blue long sleeve shirt. The silver stripes looked cool that way. Most of the time the light blue with SSgt epaulets. When we first in we had the 1505s and I kind of liked them too.

I say they should wear the ASUs, its ceremonial event. Be proud, the public likes to see all your fruit salad! Seriously, nothing opens up a good dialogue than when you get a civilian asking you what all your stuff is for and you can regal them with your stories of how you earned it. And that provides you the opportunity to talk about your battle buddies and all the things you didn't get a ribbon for. It shows the public that we are humans just like them, not robots that just obey orders.
