So my son came home from school today and, as he was telling me about his day, he was quite animated and actually excited about what he was learning through classroom discussion of social and political issues currently facing our nation. He is a senior at Harker Heights High School here in central Texas, quite close to my last duty station of Fort Hood.

His teacher introduced his class to the following as a means of really bringing out the discussion on a broad range of issues, complete with an evaluation of individual responses lined up against those of current presidential candidates. Further, the tool allows a broad range of filtering options to get a sense of the overall demographics on the issues presented.

I urge you all to take a long hard look, go through the survey-style tool, and be truthful with yourself on where you stand on the issues presented. You just might be surprised by who at least gives lip service to sharing your values on a variety of issues, and to what degree. I know I was.

According to this I side with Huckabee. I disagree with that result. It does make you think about the issues at hand.

Based on my answers I was told my views most line up with Hilary's.

NO. FREAKING. WAY.

We learned a long time ago that there are things people think they want and there are things they actually want. The two are rarely the same. Tests usually help get to the second.

That said, not a Hillary fan either but that says nothing about how our political views align.

SGT Jeremiah B. - Eh. There is no way I could trust the sincerity of a person like Hillary Clinton. Most people want her to return to the White House as the POTUS because they have some sick fascination with political dynasties. That and she's a woman. Neither are sufficient cause and neither mitigates her history.

SSG John Gillespie - People will vote for her for a number of reasons, some of them good, some of them bad, but I think largely because of a lack of options they find better.

SGT Jeremiah B. - All the more reason I'm glad my son's teacher used this with his class and why I simply had to share. More information to cut past the political posturing is always a good thing.

Not sure if I agree with the results, but it was an eye-opener and a good quiz.

Overwhelmed by the range of POTUS hopefuls for next year?

The best candidate -by far- is Jim Webb.

Besides graduating from Annapolis, being first in his class of 243 lieutenants at the Basic School, being a platoon and company commander and winning a Navy Cross, Silver Star, two Bronze Stars and two Purple Hearts in Viet Nam, he was a committee general counsel, congressional staffer, official in the Defense Department, SecNav and senator, he is a NY Times best selling author, has the screenwriting credit for "Rules of Engagement" and he even has a bleeping EMMY.

But the thing that is so awesome to me is that he resigned as SecNav in protest of what the SecDef asked him to do. It blew me away at the time. Who does that? The story is that the SecDef Carlucci asked him to misrepresent facts to the Congress. He laid it on Carlucci at the time. Awesome. Specifically he was asked to misrepresent the usefulness of a new class of Navy warships because the Reagan Administration wanted to slow the Defense build up.

Basically, he refused to lie to the Congress.

Senator Webb is exactly what we need.

Yeah, that’s a fly in the buttermilk. Senator Webb has always pretty much been hyper successful at anything he does. I am just waiting for him to jump big.

He is still the best candidate.

SSG Ryan R. - Actually, Senator Webb isn't even on the index. I'd be interested to see where he falls in with my own views. I voted for him when I lived in Virginia some years back.

Capt Walter Miller - Get your man to take the quiz. This thing is being used in schools to spark discussion amongst the younger generation, many of whom will be eligible to vote in the next election.

SSG Ryan R. - Eh. I voted for him because he was a strong defense candidate in Virginia and espoused some strongly conservative values tempered by realism that the government must serve the people. It didn't hurt that the other guy was a complete tool.

Agreed, and that's what struck me about this particular tool. I had no idea such a thing existed before this evening. If you're active at all with the primaries, I'd consider something like this to be absolutely essential for making a better informed decision as to who you are willing to throw down for and why.

IT's waaaaay early to be concerned about this. After the first primaries, you will see numbers drop substantially and be able to make a more informed choice

And if you don't bother to be involved in the primary elections, your choice of candidates will be constrained by the agenda of others. Are you really alright with only having access to vote for a candidate who has been presented in shiny wrapping by largely special interest votes?

Get involved! It's all important for the fair governance and prosperity of our nation.

Agreed. however, by the time my state's primary comes around, there will be several who have seen the writing on the wall based on numbers from the early primary states like Ohio

I thought it was pretty accurate. My top 3 were Cruz, Paul, Carson... I would have put them in Carson, Paul, Cruz, but accurate nonetheless. I used the fill in an answer function too many times, and it comes up as you not agreeing with the candidate, which is what put Dr. Carson at the 3rd place spot instead of the 1st.

I did the same as some of the stances simply were not palatable as a simple yes or no, even though it could be summed up with either. In other cases, the direction assumed by a yes or no response simply does not work as policy direction for the underlying question is much more involved, such as legalization of drugs. On several issues, I had a slightly differing stance written in, though generally in agreement, and I was listed as in opposition to clear yes or no answers.

Try modifying your answers to pick the most accurate responses given and see what that yields. I think I only saw one candidate response which could have been considered more than just checking the best suited responses available.

Did you see that you can click on any of the candidates to get a question by question comparison of their answers to your own? You may find that a particular candidate, which you currently support, has specific policy stances which are off simply off limits for you, despite the overall percentage of compatibility between your views. This is exactly the case for me, which I found a bit surprising.

It rated several higher than I would have rated them, but is generally correct in the order in which I would rank them - although I would have moved Carson a bit higher on the list and Santorum a bit lower.

SSG John Gillespie, the point is that there was a culture change in Japan after the war as great as it would have been in Iraq. We did it then, we could have done it again but for our weak leadership that lacks the vision and determination to complete the tasks they send us in to start.

Capt Walter Miller, our South Vietnamese allies might have a different opinion, especially those sent to the "re-education camps". Also the Vietnamese boat people and the Cambodians might argue with your blithe assessment.

Boo hoo hoo right? Those poor people! The only benefactors when we "help" those people are the Defense Contractors. Who else is affected? American families - bereaved parents, orphaned children, widowed spouses, service members crippled in mind and body.

It is WAY PAST TIME to denounce that paradigm.

Well as you mentioned it does value what lip service is paid for but I did find the results very interesting. At the very least it got me engaged and researching each of the candidates that popped up near the top more.

Indeed. The #2 on my own index is someone I absolutely would not vote for even if that candidate popped up at #1 with >90% compatibility. Period. My memory and command of history is not so frail as all that so, yes, what shows up can be taken with a grain of salt.

I did learn something about myself and where I best fit into the modern American political spectrum as a result of this, though I'm not the type to follow party agendas or the like. Regardless, it's a good day when I can learn something of value.
