I would say McMurdo Station in Antarctica is one rare duty station. Not too many people have been there or maybe even want to be assigned in such a cold place.

Ice station Zebra is the other name. When I first got into SOF in 1979. You were told you'd be assigned there if you screw, OPSEC. I always thought it was a joke!

Back in the day, they had the Tunnel Neutralization Team (TNT) in Korea. A unit of engineers dedicated to finding the North Korean tunnels into the ROK. Being a nerdy engineer, I would have loved that assignment.

I had spent two years as a civilian contractor working on Kwajalein Atoll. There are only a handful of Soldiers who work there; the rest are civilians (DA and contractors). It's located in the Marshall Islands, approximately 2100 miles SW from Hawaii. It's a great place for SCUBA diving, sailing and fishing.

I worked with Polish and Slovak soldiers in Bosnia. It was fun laughing at the quirks between our languages.

Shemya - A.K.A. Eareckson Air Station. A runway on a small island that's part of the Aleutian Island chain in Alaska.

Johnston atoll
Johnston Island maybe? Most have never heard of Diego Garcia till the Middle East started up and then of course Camp Zama is rare too for folks.

In 2003, jurisdiction of Johnston Atoll was finally turned over to the Fish and Wildlife Service. All structures and facilities on the base were destroyed, and runway was marked closed by a giant cross at each end. The photo clearly shows where the buildings stood and roads ran, indicate how extensive the abandoned airbase once was. Johnston Atoll is now part of the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument.

My neighbor was in the Merchant Marine's stationed at Diego Garcia, He told me he really liked it. Very peaceful and quiet. Good food and plenty to drink. He said they were a close group.

We landed on Johnston Atoll on one of my transist back to the states, '69-70. Sat for a bit and then took off again.
