There has been a few post on RP about college educations and what they can do for you in life. But do you think it is fair to say someone is unknowledgeable to be president with no college degree? Should a college degree be a requirement to become President?
Her is a little Excerpt from Howard Dean from MSNBC's Morning Joe:
DEAN: The issue here is not just an issue of dancing around the question of evolution for political reasons, the issue is how well educated is this guy? And that's a problem.
SCARBOROUGH: Are you serious?
DEAN: I am absolutely serious.
DONNY DEUTSCH: He didn't finish his senior year so he didn't get all that stuff.
SCARBOROUGH: Are you serious? You're saying he might not be qualified because he didn't finish college?
DEAN: I think there are going to be a lot of people who worry about that.
SCARBOROUGH: Do you worry about people that don't finish college?
DEAN: I worry about people being President of the United States not knowing much about the world and not knowing much about science. I worry about that.
SCARBOROUGH: Oh my God. Let's name the people that didn't finish college that have changed this world.
DEAN: Harry Truman, who was a great president, there's no question about it.
SCARBOROUGH: Did Bill Gates finish college?
DEAN: I think Bill Gates is a little different -- nobody is accusing Scott Walker of having the intellect of Bill Gates.
SCARBOROUGH: Well, nobody is accusing Scott Walker of being dumb because he didn't graduate from college except you.
DEAN: I didn't say dumb, I said unknowledgeable.
SCARBOROUGH: Well what's the difference between Scott Walker not graduating from college and Bill Gates not graduating from college?

I just consider the source.
I am not a fan of college education anyway. I only did it because there was literally nothing else I was suited to at the time.

That is very true after all it is Howard Dean! But i do think his detractors will use it against him. It's the only thing they have to use right now.

And so easily turned back.
"My opponent didn't even finish college."
"And I'm still an extremely effective and popular governor. I turned the part-time job I left college for with a Fortune 50 company, IBM, into a successful full-time job doing marketing for a major charity, the Red Cross.
"Ain't America great?"

That's a really interesting question.
Why is it that politics appears to be the only job without minimum education requirements?

It's a mixed bag, really. I think the measure should be how much one VALUES education vs how much formal education one actually has. Anti-intellectualism is just as bad as ivory tower thinking.
I personally found a college education extremely helpful in tackling complex problems. On the other hand, I respect my dad's wisdom more than most men's and he's a college dropout working in a field that he has no formal training in.

More liberal hypocrisy. I guess it's OK for Obama to seal his college records so nobody can see them, yet criticize a conservative for not having a degree.
Give me common sense and demonstrated performance over a college degree any day. Scott Walker without a college degree has proven to be a much better leader than Obama, with his alleged Ivy League credentials.

OK ... I understand. You, sir, are a true scholar and a gentleman.
“For I hope my Friends will pardon me, when I declare, I know none of them without a Fault; and I should be sorry if I could imagine, I had any Friend who could not see mine. Forgiveness, of this Kind, we give and demand in Turn.”

Killary Hillary Clinton has a college degree from an ivy league school and she got a lot of people killed and deceptively blamed it on terribly made racist skit. Having a college degree is a foundation to build on just like a HS diploma or a GED. Also, having a college degree does not take the place for experience, intelligence or common sense. When every someone fails, does someone say, "Well he did have a college degree so I don't know what happened"?

Just because a person does not have a college degree does not make him any more knowledgeable or not. College degrees are nice but where in any laws or constitutions does it state that a governor or any elected official needs a degree it does not. I finally got my degree for personal and professional reasons not because I needed it. You can be the smartest person in your class but come to common sense you have nil.

You are right we have all seen well educated but no common sense. I believe Gov Walker would be a good consideration for a Presidential candidate.

The unions in Wisconsin tried to destroy him with a recall after he won in the 2010 election. And he won again obtaining more votes than he had in the original race. He also won reelection for a second term in 2014. He is the only governor in the U.S. to date to win a gubernatorial recall election.

At some point, experience becomes equivalent to the bachelors degree. I've known 20 year production technicians that have to hand hold degreed engineers because they have no real world experience. Our company has positions that we prefer a degree but we do not automatically exclude someone for consideration because they do not have one. Hire/promote someone with a proven track record of success rather than just the education. the schools only hit the surface of knowledge required. Just like in combat, the real "depth" comes in the field. As far as Scott Walker, he fought a lot of uphill battles but was probably the first state to get back in the black and return the surplus to his citizens (based on what the media said). I wouldn't think twice about voting for him regardless of the lack of academic credentials. The smartest man I ever knew was my grandfather who had only an 8th grade education but owned several businesses that prospered. My dad worked his way up from Stock boy to VP of his company with a high school diploma.

Here are a few items of interest about Presidents that never received formal degrees
George Washington (The death of his father ended Washington's formal schooling; however, he believed strongly in formal education. In his will, he left money and/or stocks to support three educational institutions.
Andrew Jackson
Martin Van Buren
William Henry Harrison (attended college but never received a degree)
Zachary Taylor
Millard Fillmore (founded the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York)
Abraham Lincoln (had only about a year of formal schooling of any kind)
Andrew Johnson
Grover Cleveland
William McKinley (attended Allegheny College (did not graduate) and Albany Law School (graduated with honors))
Harry S. Truman (went to business college and law school but did not receive a degree)

Howard Dean is funny
Billionaire Theodore Waitt, founder of Gateway Computers, Billionaire Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple, and Billionaire Larry Ellison, co-founder of Oracle software all dropped out of college.
Call them outliers if you want Mr. Dean. They're still all billionaires and I think they might know a thing or two.
Oh and by the way we all still remember this, yeeahhhh!

Remember the congressman who said he was concerned that stationing too many troops on Guam would "cause the island to become so overcrowded that it would tip over and capsize"? Well, he has two law degrees so...yeah.

as long as he doesn't let out any obnoxious screams, he'll be light years ahead of the "educated" Howard Dean!!!!

I'm not a fan of Scott Walker, there is nothing in the U.S. Constitution that requires a college degree. I know individuals with two and three Master Degrees with no common sense. You cannot teach such things. I don't have a college degree, but I have a private pilots license. Does make more or less qualified? This is a bunch of "crap" to place so much emphasis on education and none on leadership!

Nope...a college education today means nothing. All it says is you have survived a liberal indoctrination.

Education cannot replace common sense. Some people have it, some do not. A college education is only a sign of continuing education. Scott Walker doesnt have it... why would you want a non-educated person leading this country? Would you go to the Doctors office and agree to have the office janitor (example) perform surgery on you?

Heck use Obama. He has a college degree and sucks as president. I guess Dean can't see that.

Well, Howard Dean is one of the biggest dumb asses to come along in a long time and he's a doctor, so I think his argument just failed. YAAAAAaaaaa!

2004: The scream that doomed Howard Dean
This moment following a third place showing in the 2004 Iowa caucuses all but ended Howard Dean's run for president. More from CNN at http://www.cnn.com/video/
It didn't do Dean much good. He hoodwinked his voters and embarrassed himself as a man. And he is nutz.

I've got a college degree from a state school. What would Mr. Dean say about that?

I agree with most everything thing I have read in this thread about a college edumacation, not everyone is cut out for college degree, some are more cut for technical school or even just the school of common sense to make it in life. As history does show us, most of the great titans of this nation did not have college degrees or even finish high school. As I have told most of my friends and colleagues with children and planning out their college degrees, think twice about whether they are college material.
Also, why is our Government now requiring a college degree for almost any job since Obama came to office?

I don't like Scott Walker, but I do not see a degree as a must have, if he was elected to office as governor I think twice at least? Then clearly he knows something about what he is doing even if I don't like that something.

Is this conversation any different than how the military looks at degrees? We can't be officers unless we have a degree. The ability to get past SFC would be rather difficult (some might say impossible) without a college degree. While I agree that a college education should not be a requirement for a individual to become President, how is this any different than serving as an officer in the any of the services?

Personally I don't believe a college degree should be mandatory for any enlisted position. Back in the day there was a distinct difference between officer and enlisted. Not saying you shouldn't try to further your education it just shouldn't be a requirement for enlisted. In my opinion thats why there are warrant officers. But we are evolving and change is inevitable. It was just a matter of time before the lines between officer and enlisted became closer and obscured.
