"(Unit Name withheld) BCT ordered to remove combat patches during training at Fort NoMatter so the ones without them don't get ‪‎hurt feelings‬.

Reason? "The unit just returned from Afghanistan and almost everyone has a patch but the large influx of new soldiers are E1 and E2s that have never deployed and they are saying they are left out because they don't have a patch."

This makes no sense. I can't imagine having any feelings over someone else's combat patch but respect and gratitude. It should be a serious motivator to the new guys when they see that patch, not a reason to whine..

I am not sure what the protocol is today as to uniform. I only remember that back in my time (1960's - 1970's) wearing a unit patch on the right shoulder (as opposed to left) told a story. So would removing the combat unit patch also mean removing the CIB, CMB, etc. What about ribbons for awards that are awarded under conditions of combat - do they go to? Where does this all end. The new guys are being provided a road map showing them some of the guys that have been through the fire and maybe learn from them.

SGT Philip Roncari, Sadly to say this is true. I could not believe it either. Which is why I did not post the quote exactly how I first saw it on FB. Check other links in this thread.

This was a topic of discussion last year. If fhe command team thinks this will boost morale, they are way out of touch.

Sgt Aaron Kennedy, MS coming from an Army National Guard culture, I've had the pleasure to serve under some excellent leaders. The kind that don't have to ban patches or tabs to build unit cohesion. I don't believe that this carries true across services, but in the Army I believe that sterile uniforms is a cheap patch over real issues. I realize that I'm starting to say things over again and I haven't clearly answered you, but it's what I have to say on the subject.

SSgt (Join to see) - I'm not disagreeing with you. "But" maybe some of the real issues are "related" or at least have "symptoms" outside the sterile uniform.

The article (not me) hints at a "been there done that" attitude which is being expressed through visible recognition items (like tab checking, and patch checking). Those in turn are becoming distractions to Training (which is the current Mission of the organization). If something isn't actively helping Mission, and is "potentially" disrupting it, I can't fault a Commander for "Removing an unnecessary distraction." Yes it hurts morale, but mission comes before morale in most cases.

Sgt Aaron Kennedy, MS - Glad we're on the same page, not trying to argue with anybody, but I can have a very hard time reading intent or gauging reception online.

I think I'm getting your angle, and I would agree if soldiers are copping an attitude, its imperitive to do whatever neccesary to get training completed. However I reread the article, and I simply see the Army reducing everyone to the lowest common denominator; again.

SSgt (Join to see) - Poe's Law (written word doesn't convey "emotional context")

I get why you would be upset. It appears to be removing earned items, and it doesn't breed trust in leadership.

Smh....this can't be true!!! When I was a PVT I always felt better knowing I was learning from peers that performed their jobs. I am not saying just because you have deployed you automatic are better then someone who hasn't.

You EARNED that badge and I think you deserve to wear it proudly. The newbies should look to you for guidance because of your achievements. If I they feel ‘left out’, then they should serve in a combat zone and EARN their own!
