Similar to the E-2 question, how would you react to a young 2LT who is being unprofessional with a strong sense of entitlement?

Here's the background. You are an experienced Soldier. You walk in to the commissary to see a young 2LT shopping with a headset on. You professionally and politely get the 2LT’s attention and address the deficiency. They blatantly are rude, dismiss your comment, and tell you that those rules do not apply to him as an officer. Whether you are an Officer or Enlisted, how do you react?

Being respectful of his rank, I would ask his name, unit and commander. I would also write down all that transpired, then ask him if he could join me outside the mess hall and let him know that the rules apply to everyone. Ask why he thought that rules don't apply to officers? Let him know that he was probably once an enlisted person and was expected to obey the rules, these same rules apply to officer or enlisted. Explain that this was a teachable moment and hope that he did take away something from it. Salute him and leave.

Number one as an enlisted unless you are in charge at the commissary or it is a part of your job title. You do not have a conversation or anything to say to the 2LT. If it is an issue you report it to your chain of command and let them handle it. Keep it moving.

Any justifiable reason to be wearing the headset?
I dont normally start by telling people they are wrong....
I normally start by asking why they are right...
The headset may or may not be a regulatory violation (there are ofren justifiable, rare reasons why a policy doesnt apply or when an exception should be granted)...
By asking them to justify themselves rather than berating them, they are less empowered to resist...
If and when they fail to justify their actions, they are normally mpre compliant because they arent responding from a position of heightened defense and aggression

OK, I gotta admit, thats a pretty interesting scenario, certainly. One, where I was, I went in for mail at the enlisted barracks where our mailroom was. When I'd walked out, a young enlisted guy was standing in the parking lot with apparently an open can of beer, yakking with a couple of more senior NCOs, he was somewhat boisterous. I just stood there and stared, till the more senior NCOs got the hint, and told him to close his open fatigue shirt, and basically lose the can. Now, in all truth, that was the one and only time I ever had to do that, while on active. The only other instance was at USAF OTS, there was a strict rule that OTs couldn't wear sunglasses, I was walking around with my parents and younger fraternal twin brothers who were visiting, when a newer more junior OT walked by with a friend, blatantly wearing them. So, that was the one and only instance I ever had to give a more junior OT a demerit, just thought you'd all find that at least amusing, if nothing else. God knows, I got my share of demerits, lol. About the one mentioned here, my initial thought would be for the seeing it to mention it to the commissary manager discreetly, and let them deal with it, just a thought, of course, many thanks.

I think this situation needs little more tact. If you are a junior enlisted, I would bring it up to your NCO. If you are an NCO, I would bring the 2LT behind closed doors and have a talk about professionalism. If that does not work, bring it up the chain to whoever is above the 2LT. If you are a senior to the 2LT, again bring him behind closed doors and explain the problems with their behavior. If they do not listen, start a paper trail.

You just mind your own business and do your shopping...who cares what they are wearing lol
This one is tougher than the E2 question. Everyone outranks an E2, only a small portion of SMs actually outrank even the butteriest of butter bars. I would have honestly just left it alone, us infantry guys usually don't have much tact, and I wouldn't want to risk a shouting match in a commissary where you can see general officers and DIV CSMs or even worse their spouses... no matter what I was trying to correct as a SPC Id be getting my ass reamed for a month for that.
