They say that a picture paints a thousand words. I took these pics while serving in the 1/506 Infantry, Camp Greaves Korea.

I have no regrets about being an Infantryman. It sucked often, but it was the best misery with the best Soldiers in the world!

Perfectly said. Shared misery makes for a special bond. What I appreciated about the infantry is that everyone wanted to be there and took pride in being able to handle the crappiest of conditions. Frankly I miss it.

Wanna know what it is like to be an Infantryman? Wait till the coldest day of the year. Go into your back yard and dig a large hole. Get in it. Have spouse water you with a hose while screaming at you. Fill in hole. Repeat. Eat only cold food of dubious quality. Repeat. I loved every minute of it though.

The scariest part of infantry are the mortars dropping near you and taking fire during your flight to the FOB, not being able to take control of a situation is the scariest part of the military in combat. Being ambushed is aggravating but you can figure out the location of the enemy and return fire and if well prepared take control of the situation. Infantry is like a drug for me, it's a killer at times but you can't get enough of it.

In Vietnam it was like being in a sauna all the time. Combat was loud and close up. At night there was darkness with an occasional shaft of moonlight that gave an eerie glow to the surrounding foliage. You knew when the NVA was in the area because you could smell the coals fr their campfires.

Worst part about being old infantry (pre-9/11) was the facepaint.

The face paint is back. We regularly painted up before and during training at Bragg.

SGT Mark Halmrast - The oil and bug juice makes you shiny and easier to spot. Shit, you can't tell the difference after a couple weeks in the field anyway.

At Ft Bragg I was a 13F (FIST). We did everything with the Infantry. I definitely left Ft Bragg with a greater appreciation for the finer things life, like eating with a knife and fork. Truth is, I learned some of the most useful life skills during my time there at FT Bragg.
