With the recent amount of stolen valor it is hard to keep up with all the different threads being posted here on RallyPoint. From this point forward if you have a stolen valor question, comment, and or post, then add it here. The posts that currently exist will stay, as we don't want to lose the already existing discussion content. If you have started a stolen valor post prior to this and wish to have it merged to this one then feel free to let me know and I will merge that for you. The initial post will be gone but the discussion content will be merged to this posting.

Wow, look at that collar! Also, assuming this photo is taken in a garrison/non-training environment, I believe he should not be wearing the subdued version of the flag on his right shoulder -- I believe that should be the non-subdued version. At least that's how it was in the 25th ID when I was at Schofield. Perhaps that's a local policy...not sure (anyone have insights on that?).

Also, hat tip to CPT Jacob Swartout for the list he put together of this guy's deficiencies. I would guess that the individual in this photo has some serious issues he is dealing with.

Is he buying a Navy hat? Nothing wrong with that but just curious. I guess he will wear his Navy uniform the next day or so.

That subdued flag is never authorized for wear on the right shoulder of the uniform. In a garrison environment the full color flag is to be worn at all times to include training. The reflective IR subdued flag, which that is not, is to be worn in combat environments and, at the discretion of the command, may be worn at NTC and JRTC.

SGT Furry, that's what I was thinking. We wore the reflective subdued flag at NTC but this phony is wearing a non-reflective subdued flag at not-NTC... in other pictures of him he's wearing everything on the opposite side. Pretty terrible.

Anyone ever see the Robert DeNiro movie, "Ronin" - great watch if you haven't seen it. Sean Bean plays an SAS "poser" who when asked to describe an ambush by DeNiro has men on 2 sides of a road hitting each other with crossfire. DeNiro calls him on the carpet and eventually asks him, "What color is the boathouse at Hereford?" presumably a reference that an SAS member would know. When he can't answer, he exposes himself as a "wanna be" and gets kicked off the mission. Jean Reno later asks him, "so what is the color of the boathouse at Hereford?" to which DeNiro replies, "F--k if I know"

and that's how you deal with a poser.

All depends on the quality of his groupies... If all he is getting is free drinks at the VFW, what ever. If he's regaling the college kids with his war stories, part of me says let them learn their lesson about blowhards. If he's pulling a $1000 speaking fee for the local rotary or Elk's, there is going to be an issue.<div>&nbsp; &nbsp; As for the clown on the corner with the "Homeless Vet" sign, I really don't know. I know the SOB is pulling more panhandling than an honest post service vet is getting as a WalMart greeter, but I also know that he is one of those leeches that doesn't give a damn about the image he is disrespecting or the society he is a drain on, and calling them out is more likely to get you into trouble...&nbsp;http://www.funker530.com/u-s-army-ranger-arrested-for-calling-out-stolen-valor-offender/&nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div>Baseball bat and a dark alley???? There is a right way and a wrong way. He might have done it better if he had gotten the campus rent a cops on his side first. Like you did with the manager - as it is the cops responded to diffuse the situation and the students thought that someone was attacking a "real" soldier. Timing matters.

SGT, While, after reading your post and its valid points, I have to disrespectfully disagree.
While some people choose to impersonate as a Service-member to receive benefits, others choose to get attention, it is still impersonating a Government official. We, as service members of the Armed forces, have enough issues within our own ranks with undisciplined Soldiers being blasted on the 5 o'clock news for Drunken misconduct, domestic violence and assault, or war crimes. I remember coming home on R&R and my family took me to a restaurant where military members in uniform ate free. I wore my ACUs as a private and there stood a man in ACus with a beard wearing the rank of SSG talking with some people about the military some of which were not true in regards to Regulations and lifestyle. Being a lower enlisted and not truly knowing this I confronted him tactfully and asked him about it. Then I asked what the army regulation stated about beards. He told me he was an SF NCO and didnt need to abide by that part of the Regulation nor the Oath of enlistment (when I asked hem about his oath). Long story short it came down to a CAC card being presented to the hostess when coming for our tables to verify our service affiliation which I had he didn't. This kind of misrepresentation over a free meal discredits our service and it starts with a few "harmless stories" about military life.

Besides Stolen Valor or not Impersonating a Government official is still a federal offense. SPC I may be, RCP may be in my future If I cannot make the cut off, but I will never disrespect the uniform I earned nor will let others slander it for some base desire of self worth at the expense of my fellow service members.

You have some good points SGT, but let us not forget something that some cases of collateral damage started off as seemingly harmless

Child, when you grow up maybe you will see the light but your military bearing and respect of uniform is embarrassing to the active duty men and women who have died and all those WWII and Vietnam-era veterans who are dying rapidly.

Ranger shoulder tab and pocket scroll and infantry backings missing for a CSM. I don't think so.
I do think in most states the wearing of valor awards is punishable. If I saw him I would probably say "nice costume jackass".

Good for you PO3. In recruiting, I would run across posers from time to time and they always made me smile. The only thing that surprised me about your incident was that he was not claiming to be a SeAL? It always amazed me how they would always be SOCOM soldiers?

As to the question of punishment, they shoud be forced to go through the training they are actually pretending to have endured...that would stop them cold.

Because they know MSG Sand that claiming to be a SEAL is an unofficial crime punishable by an unofficial death at the hands of said official SMs

If we had a poser who was claiming to have been a 92G at Ft. Jackson and they showed up with their McDonald's greens and National Defense ribbons, I would be okay with that (nothing against our wonderful 92Gs) but they always have to make it more heroic then it would need to be?

It is one thing to impersonate a service member and it is another to try to gain benefits whether its healthcare or getting a discount at a local buffet. The fraud part is what I don't like and if I find one, I will make him or her famous.

SSG Martin, while I agree it is in entirely poor taste and people who do it should be looked down upon, to paraphrase what I said above "...what is illegal is using one of the SPECIFIC DECORATIONS to receive benefits. I assume it is illegal to receive official government benefits based on false service...as it should be. It is NOT illegal, and in my opinion shouldn't be, to receive a free or discounted burger for wearing some camos. If that were the case someone with prematurely gray hair should be breaking the law if they get a mistaken senior citizen discount."
