The Army is the only military service without a national museum! What exhibits are you hoping to see in the future National Army Museum?

Currently, the Army is the only branch of the military without a national museum - seems a bit crazy, right? Good news though...one is finally coming!
The National Army Museum will be located on over 80 acres at Fort Belvoir, VA, less than 30 minutes south of Washington, D.C. The main building will be massive - about 186,000 square feet. Most of the rare and priceless artifacts that will be on display have NEVER been seen by the American people!

At one time the Patton museum at Knox had the best tank displays, but they took some of that stuff to Benning when the moved the Armour school.

Narrated by Museum spokesperson, Joe Mantegna, this overview of the Museum includes an in-depth look at every part of the Museum, from its location to the in...
This video definitely got me hyped to go visit the museum next time I'm in D.C.

To protect displays--and to highlight a distinctive aspect of the modern Army--instead of velvet ropes or Plexiglas, we should ring displays with reflective PT belts to make absolutely certain the artifacts are safe!

CPT David Gowel - Hmm, I like where you're going with that. Can we get a statue of Chuck Norris (with knife-hand) at the front door?
Sure he was Air Force, but he's...Chuck frickin' Norris...WITH knife hand! It would be the safest building on the planet.

SGT Dave Tracy - Chuck's boots on the ground would provide ample supporting effort firepower in case the drones get hacked, but even a statue of Chuck with a knife would be considered a WMD and we can't just leave that outside on the lawn.

CPT David Gowel - Hmm, didn't think of that. Wouldn't want some kid finding Chuck outside and inadvertently ending the world as we know it.
How about we put him behind a glass display INSIDE the building with a warning banner printed across it reading : "In Case of Emergencies, Break Glass"?

"Like" this whole conversation. The exterior elements are still being planned so I'll pass along the Chuck Norris idea. ;)

The USCG does not have a national museum, but one is being developed in New London, CT. Home to one of the first ten cutters of the Revenue Marine in 1791.

History of the Army in general. I always enjoy learning about old camps and posts that are now closed or have a long history of being around for quite some time. The tactical vehicle and aircraft displays, show cases of uniforms, weapons, famous and popular Soldiers stories and achievements, photographs, equipment, etc. Basically just about everything that can show the history of how the Army has evolved into what it is today. Be great if there was also an area that showed prototypes of what vehicles, aircraft or weapons were designed but never put in production.

Emmy French Hopefully... the best from all the branch and functional museums around the country... Must have a Higgins boat, and one of every tank we have fielded... and every vehicle... Of course the evolution of weapons and uniforms is a must... Don't forget the aircraft...
It will be hard to decide...

TSgt (Join to see) - yes when the new museum was built, and the Armor center moved in... I think we ended up with lots of extras. In 2010, when that move was underway.... I was there at Benning and saw many rail cars of military stuff from Knox...

COL Charles Williams - I was there at that time too. I was at OCS from Dec 09 to Aug 10. I saw the beginnings of the switch from the Infantry center of Excellence to the Maneuver Center of Excellence, and the changing of the patch from the "Follow Me" to the new MCOE patch.

COL Charles Williams the Ordnance Museums holdings were just sitting, rusting and rotting on rail cars awaiting the Ft Lee museum to figure out how to display the, as recently as 2015.

There is the National Infantry Museum at Fort Benning Georgia. While yes it is "Infantry," it is an Army museum.

Wish I had time to go back, I've been to it twice and I still haven't seen everything.

SPC (Join to see) - If you liked what is on display, you should see the basement. While in OCS, I had the chance to help move the old museum to the new museum. The basement houses all the stuff that they cannot display upstairs because of floor space, which equates to money. There are racks and racks of weapons from every enemy we've fought. Also, scattered around Fort Benning are warehouses full of vehicles that are too large to display in the museum. For example, I went to one warehouse that had a restored WW2 landing craft, an Iraqi T-72 tank, a few helicopters in various states of repair, artillery pieces, etc. Only less than 30% of the collection is on display at the museum.

TSgt (Join to see) - If only less than 30% is displayed then the collection must be massive. I couldn't see everything that was already on display. On top of that they were working on an Indian Wars, Mexican-American War exhibit as well as a GWOT exhibit.

I currently work for the Center of Military History at the Museum Support Center in Anniston, Alabama. I think everyone will like what's going to be displayed at NMUSA.
Just a quick plug for the WW1 travelling exhibit that will be touring the US. Don't miss it, there will be some great artifacts and interactive displays.
