MSG (Join to see) - That trip was Basic training to home. They told us we would not be able to get leave at Christmas.

Then I went to Fort Leonard Wood - 782 miles. As soon as we got there we were told that we would be able to go home for Christmas. Those that stayed would pull KP for the time the schools was not in session. Hence another 782 miles times 2. So from Nov 28 1960 until January 1961. I rode Greyhound about 3950 miles.

Capt (Join to see) - That's a LOT of Greyhound. Did they give you frequent rider mileage?

LOL No. But, part of the cost was borne by the Air Force as part of my travel. When I left Ft Leonard Wood in Feb I rode with three others, and all of our worldly goods, to Mesa Arizona. After a brief visit to relatives in Mesa, it was again Greyhound to Travis AFB, CA. I guess it is fair to say I saw quite a bit of the U.S.A. in my first 5 months of service.

And Greyhound did give a pretty good discount if one traveled in uniform.

I barely remember weekend pass after graduating, I know I bought something because I was in basic training for thanksgiving and Christmas and I got a few small gifts then. I really wanted a Sony PSP and went all over trying to find one on pass. Got one at Target near my parents hotel LOL. Odd because while it did suck it was one of the better holidays at the same time.

The day I got to tech school was 30 December. I went to take a nap after we were released from inprocessing the day we got there, almost missed an odd evening formation. Went back to bed after we were released from it at a few minutes after we all formed up, and didn't stay up for New Years.

The next day there was no training or in-processing due to new years and I slept in very late.

Flew from San Diego to San Jose. Had the forward most seat on the right side --- remember it well because one of the stewardesses stood behind the modesty panel on the port side and put her legs up on the jump seat to adjust her garters --- they were used to flying boots and liked to tease.
When I got home I borrowed my dad's car to go see my fiancé only to be told by her mother that she was out on a date with her new fiancé. Bought two fifths and went to a friend's poker party, got smashed and drove home with a CHP officer following --- seeing him in the rear view mirror instantly sobered me up. Surprisingly, I was not pulled over.

The first thing I did was go out on our 8 hour pass and get totally drunk. We had not officially graduated, but all our training and testing was done, all that was left was cleaning up everything for the next cycle. About 6 of us went out bowling and drinking, even though we were told no alcohol. We were late for curfew because we were having an issue getting two taxis to take us back to the billets. DS was waiting for us and walked past each of us and asked me if we were drunk. I told him no and he said, "yeah... right..... front leaning rest position ...... move..... In slow cadence exercise.....1.........2..3........4. Can't remember how many we did, but we were not as hung over the next day.
