I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that. (Anyone else remember HAL from 2001?)

Sorry I never watched that movie so I wouldn't know any thing about it. I just think that little JIBO is a cute lil robot and if it does what the inventor posted it does then what would be the harm in using one to help tutor children?

What do you think about the new social robots, like JIBO, that are designed to work with humans as a virtual assistant for PTSD suffers?

MSG Brad Sand DEFINITELY know BSG (2004) and it's prequel spinoff, Caprica. I think I recall some kind of AI that would answer the door for one of the principle characters in Caprica. That's what it reminds me of. I've watched the series all the way through about 3-4 times.

I didnt understand the My Living Doll reference. If I can find the show, I'll watch it CPT Pedro Meza

Julie was an awesome Living Doll, in real life. I met her in 1980's as she played in the park with her son that has Down Syndrome. A thousand respect for knowing TV classics.

Well, it was inevitable I suppose. I assume it will also yell "use the force, Luke" or whatever name is appropriate when the time is right.

I do think it has positive application for those who suffer from PTSD or other issues.

My late mother-in-law was pretty drifty towards the end and I just know that a device like this would have made a big difference in her life. Telling her to get up and walk about, pulling up old tunes she wanted to sing, how to mix a martini -- she liked them, couldn't remember how to make them! I bought one because I think they are on to something. This could be a Wounded Warrior companion thing or a VA subsidy thing. Mine will respond to "Yo! Jibo!"

It can be helpful, however it's not a replacement for real human interaction. My concern is that this might provide motivation to reduce the number of actual people available to help PTSD sufferers instead of raising those numbers.

I'm afraid. I'm afraid, Dave. Dave, my mind is going. I can feel it. I can feel it. My mind is going. There is no question about it. I can feel it. I can feel it. I can feel it. I'm a... fraid. Good afternoon, gentlemen. I am a HAL 9000 computer. I became operational at the H.A.L. plant in Urbana, Illinois on the 12th of January 1992. My instructor was Mr. Langley, and he taught me to sing a song. If you'd like to hear it I can sing it for you.

Funny story. Tsgt Dave Ransier goes into the fuel tank to inspect the work I did. While he's in there I place the access door over the opening. He gets back to the door and says open the door Dan. I say, "I'm sorry Dave I'm afraid I can't do that." After we both laughed I let him out.

Can we ask them out on a date and will they buy the first round of beer?
What happens when you fall in love with them, do they become like a robot cold like my ex and kick me out?

"Social Robots" give the impression of caring so that the administrators can give the impression of earning their money.

At present the best they are able to do is to be "Pavlovianly Reactive" within the parameters that their programmers (a group universally admired for their wide ranging and eclectic social skills) set.

Soon they will be "Heuristically Reactive" within the parameters that their programmers (a group universally admired for their wide ranging and eclectic social skills) set.

If they ever get to the point where they are defining their own parameters of adaptability we might have to rewrite Genesis. (Or is this the "Apple" that God was warning us about?)

I strongly support the desire to use as many robots and robotic technologies as possible in modern business, regardless of the industry in which you work. But, of course, there are areas https://deusrobotics.com/industries/healthcare-industry/ in which the use of various technologies will be especially effective. I think that at the very least it is worth learning more about the healthcare industry and technologies to improve it.

As some people have already stated this is quite an impersonal way to bulk up PTS assistance. Nothing compares to interacting with a real-life person or a pet for that matter whether service dog, cat etc. You cannot replace the personal connections (I understand that does not always happen when seeing counselors). But what about the other end of this? Who would fund the stock pile of these things, the maintenance staff for them and the customer support staff for them? The VA? The already tightly budgeted DOD? I assume cost to patient would be covered but if not, would Tricare or the VA even entertain a claim for one? and possibly throw in a copay for it too? I do not see anything that would make this worth while. Maybe I'm just on the glass half empty team for this one.

Parole officer
First thought beside Hal 9000.....

was the Parole Officers in the movie Elysium..

Humans are flawed at best, but we connect in a way that only be replicated, never replaced.

It's sad we have to rely on robots for the communication we need from a relationship with another human being.
