A lot. And they assign you to them based on the need for people in those particular spots. When I enlisted, privates were able to make a list of the top three places that they would like to go and the army would attempt to get you in one of those spots but I have no idea if they still do this.

Yeah, I just put a few places that I knew that they would be willing to send me. Hood, Carson, Lewis. Hood was deploying so they sent me there. Ended up at Carson four or so years later.

When I joined in 84 I received choice of first duty station. I'm from SoCal and they asked me if I wanted Ft Irwin or Ft Ord. I told them I wanted to go to Germany and they sent me to 8th ID in Baumholder. One of the greatest experiences of my life. When I PCS'd they sent me to Carson. Great duty station. My son joined almost 2 yrs ago and they would not let you choose your duty station. He lucked out. He's in aviation and they sent him to the 160th SOAR. So he's in a great unit and a great town (Savannah, GA.)

That's a very broad question. There's a bunch of different divisions 1st, 2nd,3rd,4th, 82nd, 101st, 173rd. Your unit of assignment will be based on qualifications you have, for example if you go to airborne school after OSUT you could end up in 82nd or 173rd.

Overall, the army is going to send you where they need you and where you qualified to be.

Forgot the 7th, the 25th and the 10th Mountain. 173rd is only a Brigade.

When I went through OSUT, many moons ago, you made a wish list. Never really checked to see how many got what they wanted. When I commissioned, they were filling the Light units and that weird Motorized Division, the 9th. So they shoved as many as they could through Ranger School and they went to the Light units, plus the 101st and 82nd. If you didn't get a Ranger School slot right out of IOBC, you went to one of the non light units and more than likely ended up in Germany or Korea. Did seem to be much choice in it at the time.

What Infantry units are there, and how does the Army pick you for one?

That seem like a vagued question. Are you trying to as what units are by location? They will also give you some choice to choose from then they pick where you go!

Sorry it is very vague but I'm new to how the whole operation happens after OSUT. What I guess I'm trying to ask is will you get to have a little influence to go to like airborne, and what other units are out there. I have heard of like mountain and I know about ranger.

When you enlist you can put it in your contract to go to airborne.
Also if you don’t get it in your contract your unit might can send you. Have you spoken to a recruiter yet?

Plenty of infantry divisions and you’ll be assigned based on the needs of the army at the time you are scheduled to graduate AIT. They take into account if you are airborne/ranger qualified as well

William Hay - When you get to your OSUT station at Ft. Benning, GA they'll probably have you fill out a "dream sheet" of where you'd like to be stationed, probably after the first couple of weeks there. I'd advise you to list the places where you'd like to be stationed. In my Prior Service Career, I put down Hawaii, Germany and Alaska as my locations. One of the guys in my platoon didn't put anything down & he got sent to Korea. So, you might as well ask for where you'd like to go - you may just get what you want. But it's up to the needs of the Army.

If you want Airborne, choose Ft. Bragg, NC; Ft. Campbell, KY or Vicenza, Italy (that's where most of the Army's Airborne/Air Assault units are located anyway. If you want Mechanized Infantry choose Ft. Hood, TX or Ft. Bliss, TX. If you'd like to be straight leg infantry, choose Ft. Drum, NY or Schofield Barracks, HI. You won't get a pinpoint assignment right out of AIT. You'll just report to the reception station anyway Post-AIT and they'll find a Battalion and Company to report to... Good luck in AIT & your Army career...!

and here you are again with a strangely worded question... who are you and why are you asking these weird questions is my first response to you and also define your questions... i do not know how to really even answer your question and feel sure thats the answer to what you were asking

Because im more into aviation and the WOFT side of the army thats what I research more of and im submitting a packet next year. I am asking these question incase that doesnt work out. I still want to serve my country and help in a combat MOS. Im so new to this infantry part that I dont even know what kind of units there are and what even happens after OSUT. I have a interview with a recruiter monday and will be asking many questions.

Start with asking your recruiter and being able to refine your questions on here would help... also keep in mind what is going to make Infantry is not basic or OSUT it is the training that you will get at your unit... and personally I bleed blue and love being Infantry but you might want to see what other MOS's do for you outside of the Army in case you do not have the intestinal fortitude to complete a 20 year career ... Infantry is the best but its not all glory... lots of sweeping floors and standing around

Like everyone else has said it's all based on what they need and your qualifications, what schools you've gone to. Say during your first unit of assignment you go to and pass Sniper school and some other unit needs a sniper you could very well be reassigned.

There are waaaayyyy too many Infantry units to list. As for how the Army picks them for you.....you get sent to where there is a need for a body. Kind of like a lottery.
