I see a lot of comments about how bad the Gitmo situation is for ___. "We do not want to keep them. It was bad we kept them... etc." What would be your solution? What should we have done when we were on the battlefield and had detainees? --- Release? Try to get intelligence? Kill them? Whine about lack of intelligence? What is the solution? We all know the problems.

No, I don't have a solution. But, releasing them to kill again IS NOT it.

The fact that anyone has any info about Gitmo is sloppy housekeeping. The fact remains that we are engaged in a conflict with an enemy that does not play by the same rules we hold ourselves to. Any enemies we capture whether they be overseas or your run of the mill home grown terrorist should be detained until we have no further use from them. Should we try to garner intelligence, of course because that's what the enemy is doing to ours. No we can't keep them forever, but we should keep them until we have no further use from them. If we need collateral for a prisoner swap, then at least we have something in our back pocket. But we can't be doing a 5 for 1 prisoner swap like we did for Bergdahl because that's the kind of thing that puts a price on our heads. 1 for 1 swaps is the most we should ever do in any negotiations. If there comes a time when we are no longer engaged with the enemy, then we can open up terms to release any detainees providing that they are not a continued danger to the people of this Country. For example, your average footsoldier might not be a future threat, but the bomb maker responsible for the deaths of dozens if not hundreds might be too dangerous to release. In those cases, either life in prison like we do for our worst criminal offenders or a quick execution.

You are correct that a 5-1 swap is excessive, but having no people to swap will put us at a great disadvantage and leave us with out the ability to recover our own.

Move the prison and its prisoners to Hawaii and rent the land in Cuba to Hilton Resorts. Maybe they could put the prison somewhere near the Obama compound.

It is an Unnecessary waste of Defense Funds. Move those bastards to Ft Leavenworth and Marion Federal Pens and move out that way we can stop paying the Cuban Government Rent. Let them deal with what is probably a Super Fund Site (With all the HAZMAT Contamination) that comes with a Military Base that old.

Sorry, I do not think paying the rent on Gitmo is bad. In fact, IF the US Gov thinks it is too much, I would personally pay it. You see the cost is $4085. The deal was made at the turn of the century after the Spanish American War. Back then, it was big money, but my house taxes are about the same. I will gladly take Gitmo in exchange! https://news.vice.com/article/will-cuba-now-cash-55-years-worth-of-guantanamo-rent-checks

Will Cuba Now Cash 55 Years' Worth of Guantanamo Rent Checks? | VICE News
Renewed diplomatic relations between the US and Cuba have been announced, but there are still several unresolved questions concerning Guantanamo.

I think that we should have killed them all. They should have never made it to GITMO.

We needed that intelligence. As a former infantryman, I know we need someone to tell us where the bad guys are located. As an intell guy, I never wrote a good intell report with good actionable info from a dead body.

We can look for what people view as problems and find solutions.
On the issue of can't keep detainees forever... You know that IS has a solution. If we used their style or had reproposity with them, we could use their SOP. Get the info, and kill them? I think we can keep them for the duration of the war. (They are good for trade if we have an American become a POW...POW exchanges happen in every war.)
We MUST capture the enemy on the battlefield. They are a great source of intelligence that can save our lives. The intelligence gained can shorten the war.

Both the news media and many liberal politicians have been claiming for years now that we don't get any intelligence from them and that we should just let them all go.
