Since we all have so much pride in our country. I was wondering where you stood when it came to purchasing a car.

I've never known ANYTHING to be rode as hard, as often or as many times than an Infantryman.....or a Ford! Nothings made in America anymore. Parts are flown in from all over the world and ASSEMBLED in America. That's not American made!

I LOVE my old '97 Ford Ranger (bought used in '99 with 55,000 miles). Reliable as hell and still running after just under 300,000 miles. Other than wear parts, I've replace the starter, that's it.
My 2011 Explorer (Bought new - first and last time I do that) is a fun ride. However, it has already had more repair bills - and more recall work - since I bought it than the Ranger has had to date.

Very sad that they don't make Rangers any more. May have to try a Tacoma when the Ranger finally dies.

I've always loved Fords. I have a 95 F-150 and a 07 Mustang GT. Never really wanted foreign cars. Not out of spite just the fact they have never been my cup of tea.

BMW's and Mercedes never really carry the same luster after living a couple of years where they are used as police cars and taxi cabs.

99% of consumers don't actually know which cars are American vs which are foreign -- and that's not even considering that most "American" cars include a large percentage of "foreign" parts.

Quite a few years ago "Buy American" was a big deal -- including the US government handing businesses a lot of free money to support "Buy American" advertising campaigns. Chevy took federal grant money to make a TV commercial pitching the "Buy American" theme. Only problem is that the TV commercial showed a Chevy Luv, a Toyota small pickup, and the Volkswagen small pickup. The commercial had a big Buy American heading and the Chevy would come to the front while the Toyota and VW fell behind. After the commercial had been airing for about a month, Volkswagen sued Chevy because the VW pickup was the only vehicle in the commercial that was made in the USA.

There are two major Ford Assembly Plants in the city where I live. The United Auto Workers union hall is just down the street from one of those assembly plants. The UAW had a big sign at their front parking lot saying that only American Made cars could park in that front lot (foreign cars had to be parked in another lot at the rear of the building). I was always amused to see the that there were usually several Ford Crown Victoria cars, Mercury Grand Prix cars, and one union official's Lincoln Town Car all parked in the front lot, despite the fact that all those cars were actually foreign made.

Most Of Us Americans, Due To Lack Of Education In Our Schools, Haven't Had Any Important Education In Simple Economics To Understand The Difference Between Price & Cost... I've Chosen To Owen A Benz As It's Among The Lowest Cost Of Ownership..YES, That's Correct, And Here's Why..
#1.... Although The Purchase Price Is somewhat higher than most cars, It Remains A Good Buy.
#2.. ..Higher Reliability
#3..... Although Repairs Are More, They Have Fewer Repair Requirements,Therefore A Lower Overall Cost Factor.
#4.... Benz Has A Superior Fuel Savings As They Get Better Mileage.
#5.... Benz Can Be expected To Give It's Owner A Life Expectancy Of Producing 100,000 To 200,000
Miles On It's Engine.
#6 ..... Insurance Costs Are Only Slightly Hire Not What Most Would Think.
#7......Higher Resale Values At Time of Trade In Or Sale.
SO: A Mercedes Benz May Well Be One Of The Least Expensive Automobiles You've Owned,
They Just LOOK Expensive

SFC David Reid, M.S, PHR, SHRM-CP, DTM - ... As A Purchasing Director For FMC, It Was My Profession To Purchase the Best Product For The Dollar, And I Was The Best One At It In The Entire FMC Division. Many Were PO'd That I Was Buying Foreign When Working For An American Company... BUT, Most Of The Products To Manufacture American Automobiles CAME From Japan. Including It's Steel & All Related Products. Almost Every Plastic Parts As Well.
"BUY AMERICAN".... But Where Can We Find Any?

I wish the US made good cars.

Unfortunately, if you want your country to make good cars, it appears from the evidence that they best thing you could hope for would be to have been on the losing side in the second world war.

The Japanese make the best cars in the world based on price and quality.

The Germans make nice cars, but wow that fashion statement badge on the grill costs a LOT of money.

I like to look at Italian cars. I like leave their frequent servicing to their owners.

If I was going to buy a pickup, however, I would probably buy a Ford.

Being A Retired Purchasing Director Of FMC.. Please Allow Me To Say
:The Mercedes Benz Is In The Top 10 Of The LEAST Cost Of Automobile Ownership
In Other Words "The Best Investment For an Automobile"
#1... They're Not Much More To Purchase Than A Quality American Car,
#2 ... The Insurance Rates Are Comparable.
#3....Although Higher Maintenance Costs, The Need Of Repair Is Far Less Frequent.
So The Actual Annual Repair Costs Are Less.
#4... Fuel Economy is Superior, Much Better Mileage
#5....More Solidly Constructed, Both Body & Motor. Including More Layers Of Paint.
#6...Resale Value Is Better & Looses Less On Trade Ins Or Sales.
That About Covers It & Explains Why A Benz May Be
Your Best Automobile Investment.

I like VWs and Porshes and have never owned anything else. It's just a personal style and driving feel preference. Lots of people like other types of cars and their reasons are probably just as good as mine (i.e. some emotional investment).

Love some of the new Chevy's. Same with a couple of the Dodges. I hate Fords. Used to love Japanese cars but I got screwed on my last Nissan as did my dad on his last Toyota. I can't get past the stereotyping of Honda with the wannabes and their huge exhaust.
I went German on my last. The A4 had no features but it has a great feel driving it. The A4 is my wife's. My S6 has all the bells and whistles. 0-60 as quick as a C7 Vette and I get 30 on the highway. It handles with an M3. Could'd ask for more.

I like my F-150 and it is likely the only vehicle type I will own, other than an F-250, or F-350.

Cars.com 2015 post about "American" cars. Thought this discussion would find it helpful. Of the top five, three are "Japanese" vehicles.

I realize this is an older thread but since my industry is Automotive I felt I could add something. I still have an emotional attachment (patriotic?) to American brands. But the honest to god truth is that the automotive market has become global and there is no such thing as an American car. It may be assembled here but most parts are imported. There are Japanese cars assembled here but still, most of the parts are imported.

Then you have to consider who really owns the company, where do the profits go? No telling anymore. Just buy what you like because having an American Made car is not realistic anymore.
