Everyone has a favorite assignment location/command, and a worst. What/where/when are yours? What/who made it good or bad? How?

In my personal opinion every assignment is different for everyone of us it's what you make of it for some it might be awesome for some it might be the worst.

SSG Turkezer, very true. Attitudes R Us. However, there are sometimes places where mediocrity is the standard of excellence. Sad, yet true.

I really wouldn't say there was a best/worst.  There are lots that I've learned over the years/assignments.  Now if you are talking about best/worst deployments, then you have a great question!  I can talk about that all day!!

SGM (Join to see) I served in a few CAV assignments throughout my career:11th, 4th, 7th and 16th right before retiring out of Benning...sorry I do not recall the Patterson family story. I helped deactivate the 11th and Downs Barracks back in '93, I have to say though, that was the best 2 years of my career being a member of the Blackhorse!! 1SG (Join to see) I wish that I could make the "Last Patrol", I never had a chance to return to Germany after I left the Blackhorse when we deactivated the Regiment, and would love to see how much things have changed.

SFC William Swartz Jr, I was fortunate enough to spend 1/4th of my career with the 1st Squadron, 74-77 and 79-82. I credit my development as a Soldier and Noncommissioned Officer to that time period as I was promoted to CPL, SGT and SSG there. In case you didn't know. the 2016 Reunion is going to be at Ft. Benning, to include a re-dedication to the Blackhorse monument that recently was shipped from Knox to Benning and is presently in storage. As much as I enjoy returning to Fulda, OP Alpha, seeing old friends, brushing up on my old "banhof Duectch." It is very disappointing to see the changes to the Kasern. Fortunnately, Down Barracks is now being well used, however, for almost 10 yrs it basically sat there like an over grown ghost town. Now there have been many changes on post and lots of activity.

1SG (Join to see) well, if I am still in the are I will definitely have to attend the 2016 Reunion, wouldn't have to worry about a hotel room for me lol! I had heard about Downs being kind of abandoned for a while, but I had also heard they used it to house immigrants for a while as well. Would love to visit Fulda again, it was a great place to be, although I arrived after the Wall came down, and never did a Border Tour, I did some of my best training and tanking the 2 years I was there!

SFC Swartz...minor point of edification for all--one INactivates a unit involving people (which is Activated, Constituted, Mustered); one DEactivates an object, such as a bomb.
Of course, some units are a bomb too.

Ft Drum was a frozen hell on earth. I..HATE.. being cold. That place only has 2 months of spring like weather and they call it summer.
FT Campbell is the place I loved.

Best Probably Dodge (Diego Garcia), Worst NSGA Adak, AK. I loved them all for different reasons but if I had to nail down what made a Command score lower or worse it is Overmanagement/Micromanagement. Adak was isolated wet and cold so they Minimized your off time and had lots of stuff to keep you busy (Unnecessary Inspections) so you wouldn't get cabin fever which was sad because it was a gorgeous island in a stark natural way. The ones I like the Best is where I was given Autonomy which actually was quite a few. CINCPACFLT Staff we were Staff the crème de la crème so they saw no need to manage us. My 3rd command NSGD Sgrove was so small so even as a newly frocked E-5 I was Asst Dept Head. COMSPAWARSYSCOM 6211 Big Command but we were a Small Project so I was functioning as a Division Officer on top of being the Admirals Master at Arms.

My best military assignment would be two, one being in the Berlin Brigade and two Embassy Duty. As far as the worst assignment I can't think of any.

SGM my best assignment was with the 20th / 1149th MP DET (CID) where I served as the Detachment Sergeant in Iraq. My worst assignment was as a Senior Instructor with the 7th BN (PS) 108th REGT 4th BDE (PS) 94th DIV (FS) 80th TC Fort Jackson, SC.

The Soldiers and leaders assigned to and above the 20th / 1149th MP DET (CID) made it the best assignment. We had huge mission accomplishment and great esprit de corps as well as unit integrity from the beginning of our rotation through the end.

The 7th/108th is best summed up by a lack of care or concern for Soldiers, a complete lack of planning or forethought, and a departure from all of the values which make the Army great. While I did everything I could to create and maintain a positive environment around me and the Soldiers to whom I maintained a sphere of influence, in the end, I was just glad to retire and get away from that unit.

Fort Drum on both counts. Disliked most of it except for the life long friends I made and the fun times we made for ourselves when I was there.

Vicenza, Italy; FAMC Aurora, CO; Ft Campbell, KY; Ft Sam Houston, TX; Ft. Gordon, GA; Ft. Sill, OK - they all have their strengths and really liked a lot about all of them but if I had to chose:

Worst: I'd say Gordon due to the everyday 14-18 hours a day in training for 18 months but loved what time off I had tooling around Augusta.

Best: Overall probably Ft. Campbell so far. Close to Nashville, had a good unit (86th CSH) lots to do, people were friendly, etc.

CPT McDonald...amen to that...I enjoyed Vicenza, yet we (SETAF) were deployed so much no one got to see much of Italy. Been to all the others and agree they each have flavor. Training bases/TDA vs TOE always makes a difference in the quality of life.

Oddly the worst was Fort McPherson in Atlanta GA. Third US ARMY is a 3 star HQ with no subordinate units. Millions of dollars were spent with long hours creating shredded paper. It's where morale went to die. The Majority of the Jr officers I knew there got out. The City wasn't bad but when you hate your job it's hard to enjoy it. Honestly I'm surprised I didn't get out then.

The only place worse was deploying to Kuwait with the same unit because it was all the fun of a job you hate that you know doesn't help the effort in any way without any of the drawbacks of going home at the end of the day!

Maj Miller---well now, I found FORSCOM not that bad, was there twice (once for Olympics) but the first tour I was travelling somewhere else all of the time. And yes, a tiny place like that has some serious issues, like a 4-star checking ID cards at the PX and stopping his car when soldier didn't salute...I mean, really? Sounds like issues for 1Sgts to handle...but for all those folks getting their tickets punched it was likely a good deal--most of the staff weenies got promoted. Some were good field officers gasping for air as it sounds you might have done.
