The VA has requested documentation to prove that I deployed to southwest Asia or the gulf. They aren’t asking for a specific document, they even say it can be receipts. I’m not sure what else will do for them and I need proof, not just that I deployed but where I deployed to. They have my dd214 and aperently the don’t look this up themselves. Where and how do I show them?

Not sure if the USMC does unit movement orders, but if they did, that would be hands down proof of when you rolled, who with, and how long it was originally designed to be in country. If you got any awards in country, that too would prove you were there.

Do you have any sand in any of your old gear? I pulled out my cammies and had sand in them, still !!!! Just kidding, there are really good answers below.

Your assignment orders should contain that information I would think to include unit and location. I know when I was assigned in South East Aria, Vietnam to be specific the orders had unit and APO address at least. My DD Form 214 also listed the awards and so did My Military Personnel Record.

We never got formal orders, and we were an expeditionary unit so we got a GWOTex for deployment and that isn’t specific enough I guess. I’m trying to find my OMPF buy no luck so far.

Lt Col Charlie Brown - The only thing I can think of quickly is a copy of his deployment orders... Veterans do not usually keep track of their orders, but should file a copy for future reference, especially because if they are injured in any way, they need to be able to give a copy to the VA as part of a claim. He might be able to use a Notarized Letter from a superior officer (Preferably a commissioned officer) attesting to his deployment, which may be acceptable. It could be from another platoon soldier, NCO or Officer. Lastly, He could file for a copy of his DOD records at the appropriate records section... That won't happen fast though... That is all I can think of at the moment...

Ma'am, I would think that the DD214 would have a SWA Service Medal on it, or some type of theater award, Just a thought

If you can track down any set of orders or a service or tour award that proves you were there.

Do you have an entry on your DD214 for a period of imminent danger pay? That should do it.

Cpl Stephen McMenamin - Have you met with someone from DAV or one of the organizations that help veterans with navigating the VA system? I strongly suggest that you do.
