Optics weren't even a thing when I was in (unless you were a sniper). I just can't even wrap my head around qualifying with anything other than iron.

I like iron sights. For some reason I just never was that excited about any version of optics.

Back in the day iron sights were the only way to go. Now that I can't even see the front sight, I have no clue how the old guys even did it. I now understand why we have burst fire on our weapons. Point in the general direction and spray.

Have always liked iron sights. Entire military career iron sights, always fired expert. Got my Dad's 30-06 Enfield, peep sights. Done just fine with it as well. I made a fantastic shot with it one time, amazed a client as he couldn't believe a shot like I made could be done with iron sights.

SFC John Birks In Basic Training in 1953, all of our M-1 Garand rifles; gas operated, clip fed, semi-automatic, shoulder-fired weapons, weighing 9 1/2 lbs, w/ 8 round clips had iron sights!
We did learn about Night Vision sights mounted on iron sighted, M-1 Carbines at a night firing range. The target image was very greenish in coloration, like a bad dream!

SSG Richard Hackwith
CSM Charles Hayden Passed 7/29/2025 - Last time I was at CSLO was around '84 just a few of pre-WWII buildings left in that area. I have covered just about all the remaining ground there. Do you go this far back?

SSG Richard Hackwith That's one! We waxed the red linoleum floors and cleaned footprints w/handkerchiefs if we had to enter during the day. Ft Irwin also had a few 'huts' back then. Those windows assist w/'Ranger' push-ups!

I too remember doing rifle drills on KD ranges with iron sights - windage and elevation were discussed with the M-14 rifle and the M-16 rifle SFC John Birks
