LT (Join to see) - I joined the USAF at the end of my 1st year of college, because it was a Liberal Arts College and that just wasn't me, I think technical... Joining the USAF provided me with a great Technical Education, and I became an Airborne Navigation Systems Tech. Repairing Inertial Reference systems, Doppler and Search Radar, Instrument Landing Systems, Tactical Air Navigation Systems and more... Finished my four years and went back to college and achieved two degrees... The rest is history...

Wow, I wish I had a Patriotic or other good reason...but basically I wanted to be near my True Love...so I joined the National Guard in 1969. I just wanted to get laid regularly. Okay, we were both Virgins, but we did some serious cuddling. But 1969-70 wasn't a good year for the National Guard...Riot Duty, National Teamsters Strike, Patrolling for snipers on overpasses...so in August of 1970, almost exactly one year after I joined the National Guard, I asked to join the Active Duty Army...as I told Top: "I didn't join the Army to point guns at Civilians in my own Country."
All the things that these other fine Soldiers talked about on this thread...really didn't dawn on me for decades. I did love the travel, the community, and the roof over my head an food- but I don't think I appreciated my Service until I was out of the Service. If that makes any sense at all.
Oh and Dad and all his brothers, all my Mom's brothers, and four of my six brothers all served. So yeah, the family connection is there too. Six Nephews and one Niece and every brother in law. Sheesh...we sure know how to sign papers. LOL

LT (Join to see) Lieutenant, I wanted to serve my country as my father and uncles had done before me, and also felt that assisting South Vietnam was a just cause. Earning the GI Bill was certainly on my mind.

I can understand that. I have family that served in every conflict as well however I am the first career services member.

I was drafted in 1972. I had a wife and 2 kids at the time. I served because I felt I owed it to my country

I had a dozen draft guys in my Basic and AIT (1970), who, like you, were already married, had kids, or were just out of college. I asked if I could be sent over instead of them...but it didn't work that way. I got sent to Germany with one other guy, everyone else went to Vietnam. I can't even imagine the sacrifice of both you and your young wife trying to take care of a family of little ones, and you at war. God Bless you, her, and your children!

SGT Kevin Hughes Thank you. Let's be clear......my wife is my hero. She didn't sign up to raise a 2 year old and 3 month old by herself. I was only home for 30 days in 2 years with 19 months overseas. She did a great job holding things together. All I did was serve as a Company Clerk

At 17 I was a bit of a problem, I got a boot in the posterior, my dad signed the papers and I was gone! It didn't take long, I became a totally different person. After Basic and AIT I went home... all my friends were so weird. My parents were so surprised, as I had become so mature in such a short time.

Amen to that, you weren't alone on that journey. My friend is dealing with that right now with her Grandson, and he leaves for Basic on Friday. She asked me if he would come back a different boy. I said he would come back a different Man.
