Ha very funny! This distracted driver distracts me when I look over and see this. Funny thing is that I don't think they crash a lot while doing this, they pretty much have it down pat.

Have you ever known someone that couldn't chew gum and walk at the same time?
I've ridden in vehicles where the driver was overly distracted complaining about another driver that was driving and texting.....to the point where they themselves were distracted driving!
Someone could be singing their favorite song and be distracted while others may have a better presence of mind and have the ability to drive and chew gum at the same time!
Not the same thing as drunk driving however in a broad definition, it has the potential to cause havoc as well.

A car is a 5000lbs bullet, it is a deadly weapon just like a fire arm. If one abuses the rules of the road people can die. I see people driving around all the time with their damn phone in front of them. This makes my blood boil.
When I was about 12 I saw a child get hit by a car, she was about 5 or 6 as I recall. She ran between two parked cars and was hit by a member of the state patrol. She needed to be transported by ambulance for medical care. It has something that has stayed with me.
The thought of killing someone because of bad driving habits disturbs me very much. I wish people would consider the impact that has on the lives of others as well as them self. Think of the guilt and self loathing a normal person would have.

I also think we drive distracted due to not knowing we are doing it. Is this the case when people drink and drive?.....Thoughts?

Our irresponsibility with technology has created this problem and only technology will solve it. Self-driving cars, deliver us from this scourge of our own making!

Statistics show that texting and driving is now killing more people than drinking and driving.

I am a motorcyclist. I enjoy riding. I hate seeing people talking/texting on cell phones ESPECIALLY when I am riding the bike (car/truck I am still not happy, but I know I am a little bit more protected). Here in Montana, we have problems. I feel that Drunk driving is still a huge issue here....as is Texting. Drunk driving is still #1 in my book.... here is a choice example of the kinds of issues I get to deal with (keep in mind that this is #7 for her... which is a FAR CRY from the 10-15 repeat offenses for some people that we see in the news in Montana....). http://www.krtv.com/story/28734121/woman-charged-with-7th-dui-in-billings
Woman charged with 7th DUI in Billings
Prosecutors say that she had two DUI convictions in 1994, and one each in 1996, 1997, 2005 and 2008.

SSG (Join to see) about 3 weeks ago (give or take a week or 2), we had someone come up on their 12 or 13th charge of DUI. I have seen as high as 15 in the news in the last 5 years.... the number of times I have seen 5 or less is staggering....6-10 is frequent enuf to know there is a problem, and 11+.....I am just at a loss for words. And yet they drive.....

That is a good question and the answer of course, is yes. The only thing I warn about is harassing drivers who may not be doing anything as a way of increasing revenues. If you are doing it, shame on you driver. You are the kind that does it everywhere, whether at the checkout line or in the line at your local bank.

Yes!!!!! So I ride, and our biggest fear is not downing the bike, its other drivers. I have had a few near experiences and when I see there face look up in shock at me because they were texting, I just shake my head.

It can be worse in my opinion. Honestly, when you are driving a vehicle, the only thing you should be doing is driving. People who say "Well, I'm just better at multitasking"... no, your not. Science has shown that each task takes a portion of your attention away from the primary (and the way some people treat there phones, you have to wonder which is indeed the primary). They need to make it a primary offense (something an officer can pull you over for by itself) and it needs to be treated like intoxicated driving.

Thanks for the feedback. Such things may be hard to prove. I mean other than the whole "I saw you on your phone" thing.

Not really. If it is a legal issue, all they have to do is call the carrier and ask if any outbound texts were sent between a given time (within a couple minutes of pulling the person over) and they could give them the information. They could also simply take the phone and check it themselves... I think if the law were more strictly enforced (i.e. first offense treated like a first offense is a large fine, second treated like first offense DWI) it would probably discourage a lot of people.

The law against distracted driving is already on the books. It's called reckless driving. No need to create more laws just to make people feel good. Enforce the laws we already have.

I don't feel there needs to be any more changes to laws. I feel people need to be more careful. That will not irradiate the problem, nothing will people just get...SQUIRREL!!!!!...What was I talking about

I used to be a cop here in Florida, down here it's very hard to make a reckless driving charge stick. Barring some other factor, such as an accident, reckless driving charges were usually dropped by the state attorney because they could never get a conviction.

What's your definition of distracted?? If you mean by checking RallyPoint while driving... then yes, maybe just a little. TeeHee

There is a great commercial where a car full of teens screwing off in the car get sideswiped by a truck. Then a cop says had I seen her texting and driving and given her a ticket it might have saved her life.
It is true. Some states are getting ridiculous with the distracted driving laws. No food, no beverage, no smoking, no fornication, no radio, no cd, no cb failure to comply results in a fine and points.

Our town just did the whole no texting and driving rule as well. So far, I haven't gotten caught. LOL

Watching some of the videos of the distracted driving studies where the subjects thought they were doing fine until they watched the video as they were weaving back and forth slightly into other lanes might be a wake up call. Two distracted drivers do the same thing might not get caught until the accident report when they hit each other.
