Your Last Ever Military Duty Assignement, Did You Enjoy It Or Not?

Looking back, I enjoyed my last duty at Fort Hood Texas from 2012-2014 in the UNITED STATES ARMY. The Great Place challenge me with a lot of field time and a deployment to Afghanistan. I am so glad, I served with the 1st Cavalry Division(1st team) and fellow Troopers wearing/earning the Silver/Golden Spurs with humility and pride.

My last assignment was in the IRR. I'd left the Army Reserve TPU because I could no longer support my Commander and I wasn't going to let the unit see strife in the leadership so I left. In the IRR I found a job online with the World Basic Information Library, one of the best kept secrets of the Reserve there is. In this program you are assigned a country. You then go online and gather information, download it, and transfer this information to the Library through your leadership. It is a fantastic way to keep getting good years in the Reserve. I maintained a DA-1594 of all my activities and collected 4 retirement points a month. I was assigned Lebanon and I really learned a lot. It's amazing all the intel one can get online. I received my final NCOER from this unit and they gave me an AAM for my work.

I didn't like my last assignment. The command was toxic, and I was in a total personality/job-type mismatch (I'm a talker and I was forced to be segregated in a tiny office, away from everyone...). I was also in a Geo-bachelor situation. It was a long, LONG two years.

MCPO (Join to see) roger that, I can relate being a long two years. I was displaced for 18 months before I retired from my family. There was some dark days in my last two years as well.

AIT committee group Fort Polk La 1967-1968 forced me to become an instructor with my fear of public speaking being formost found that with the help of my fellow instructors was probably one of the most fulfilling time of my life,note if my wife ever reads this it was our marriage of course!

My last assignment was tailor made for me. It would have allowed me to use my education and experience to do a job. However, a 2LT got involved and decided to change things. The change was I filled out my retirement papers effective immediately at the next drill.

The Mighty, Ark, Razorback. I wouldn't say it was my favorite but one Hell of a Crew and I am proud of my Association with all of them. I have 4 rows of Ribbons. 3 of those rows were earned on the Ark on one TAD Trip and as Ships Company 4 years later. Fiery Vigil/Desert Storm/Southern Watch/Desert Strike. President Bill Clinton's Flagship he used to come out and visit occasionally. As the Presidents Flagship had the Lead Position in the Parade of Ships in front of Waikiki in Honor of 50th Anniversary of VJ Day. I wouldn't have missed it for anything. My LOA for my Career is Signed by President Bill Clinton. A lot of stuff on the Ark had his Signature.

I learned to make the best out of each of my military assignments SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL. My favorite assignments were when I was leading infantry soldiers and the second best assignments were supervising more senior soldiers. I had a love hate relationship with my final staff assignment on active duty while mobilized because I was doing important work well above my pay grade and I was getting insulted regularly by a political appointee SES who I was co-chair with on an inter-service multiyear project. After demobilizing I enjoyed training and assisting others who were senior NCOs and officers and quietly supporting the organization I was assigned to support.

I had an awesome twilight tour. I retired as the 1st Sgt for the Receiving Barracks, MCRD SD. I had great Drill Instructors to work with and best of all, My career began and ended at the exact same place, literally. I lived in Pacific Beach, what could be better. We had a great time.

16th MP BDE Ops SGM. BDE CDR was toxic and re-leaved for hitting on peoples wives. Not the best assignment by far.

Hated it. Hardship in Korea. Assigned to Cmp. Howze, as our unit was notorious for destroying other units during off time.(Another words we got drunk & eff'd up anybody not in our unit) So we got assigned our own base w/ only 9th Regt. Units. Then having to pull 2 tours on the "Z" as Desert Storm kicked in & no replacements were assigned. And every request to goto Desert Storm was denied.
Then, my platoon had the barracks by the chow hall, cool, but for formation we had to climb 495 steps 4 times a day....
Only 1 bar on post....
Had to take R&R to even get to Casey/Hovey, as we was on 1 hour recall 24/7/365....
So, yeah, it totally sucked ass!
