I am reading a book called “Dream Land” about the opioid crises and illegal narcotics. About 30 years ago there was an attempt to reduce narcotic use by having chronic pain patients undergo multimodality treatment to make pain manageable not remove it. They used mental health personnel from psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers and pain management. Of course the insurance companies didn’t want to pay all the people involved and doctors could not afford to spend the time with patients this system required. So back to the smilie face pain scale and large dose narcotics.

I'm a child of the '60s, better living through chemistry, "White Rabbit," etc. I trust my pain pills, and myself to take them not to let them take me.
