The public perception of the military services and the service members is a major factor in their individual views on military service veterans SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL.
I enlisted at the tail end of Vietnam and the public tended to have a low-view of active-duty service members while they revered WWI, WWII and Korean War veterans.
The sad thing is the view of the veterans who served in those wars has not changes significantly.
Perceptions of service members and veterans of OIF and OEF was generally high until the Abu Ghraib prison scandal in 2006. The photos of degraded prisoners shifted many people's perceptions. In a way reminiscent of the Vietnam War some emphasized abuses by military personnel in Iraq and Afghanistan and forgot the bigger picture of overall excellent behavior by our forces conducting very difficult operations.
Remember how much coverage of the Pat Tillman fratricide case after the facts indicated he had been killed by friendly fire along with his Afghani translator in April 2004.

The American public's view on veterans and the armed services does shift over time but the fact that the sons & daughters of the general public do the actual serving does help to keep the image of the warriors high.

Thanks for the article SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL and LTC Stephen F. LTC Greg Henning SFC George Smith TSgt Joe C. for bringing it to my attention. I returned from Vietnam in 1972 and in early 1974 I met the woman who would become my wife. I met her father pretty quickly as he had to approve the relationship! He was a WWII veteran and we started chatting about the military. The first questions he asked me was if i was a baby killer and drug addict! I was shocked and didnt really know how to respond. That was the general perception of Vietnam veterans portrayed unfairly by a liberal media. I saw this change during the first gulf war and we really came full circle by the time of the cowardly terrorist attacks of 911.

Shortly after 911 my twin brother and I started participating in 911 observances in NYC wth the FDNY of whom my other brother was a fire marshal. His boss, FM Ronald Bucca was killed in the WTC. Ronald was a Green Beret National Guard member and after his son graduated from college, he also went into the Green Berets. Every year a bunch of his friends come together form around the country and we do the observance in NYC. The first time I did it, all of us in military uniform marched around the WTC site to the Pipes and Drums of the FDNY. I realized how much America's perception had changed of their service members. I was just about in tears; it was so very emotional. It has been that way every since. In two more weeks I will go down again to pay my respects to FM Bucca and the 343 members of the FDNY who gave their lives that day and the thousands of others who also perished and I will continue to as long as I am able to. I did have the privilege of working on the 104th floor in 1WTC in the early 80's. I loved going to work there. The photo is of me signing the memorial in the pit of Ground Zero long before the reflecting pools were built.
