Making new year resolution is similar to dieting fads COL Mikel J. Burroughs
A diet is what we eat - yet in our culture people use the word to go on a short-term fast of sorts so they lose weight, lose inches, etc. The same applies to setting goals which may not be attainable. Then they relax and go backwards from their goal.
The main thing should be clear but it is not always. Planning is useful but needs to be flexible since situations change.
Setting a goal may be a good thing as long as it is done with wisdom. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.
Each day I submit my plans to the Lord and seek HIS guidance. He directs my steps and modifies my plans. He is the personification of Wisdom after all.
1. Proverbs 16:9 "The mind of man plans his way, But the LORD directs his steps."
2. Proverbs 19:21 "Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the LORD that will stand."

I don't believe in resolutions. I don't believe in waiting until the future to start changing yourself or wanting a better "you". Start now, not today, but in this instant. Why put off tomorrow what can be done today? You want to get fit? Start now - no gym membership required. You want a better life? Start now - start thinking and acting more positive. You want to stop smoking or stop drinking? Start now. If you are waiting so you can "get drunk one last time", that "last time" will definitely not be your last. Changes happen when people make commitments to the NOW. Not to the later. "Goals" with timelines are for things that require time to complete - i.e graduate college with a 4.0, run a marathon by August 2017, buy a house by March 2017.
The problems all resides by not making goals, but by putting off our goals and desires to another date.. "I will start the New Year off by doing (insert change here)." Or even worse, not setting a date, but instead saying "I will get fit in 2017". Really? When. Will you start January 1st, June, August? December? Live in the now.
Instead of saying, "I want to get fit. I should start going to the gym. I would like to start eating healthier. Maybe I'll have a better attitude tomorrow" change those weak words to "I WILL get fit. I WILL go to the gym tomorrow morning no matter what. I WILL start eating healthier starting now. I WILL have a better attitude from this point forward." When you "WILL" something, it will happen. Where there is a "WILL" there is a way. Maybes, shoulds, wants, thinks are weak words and have no power or weight. Don't think it, SAY it, MEAN it, DO it.
Sick? Tired? Run down? Did you stay up too late? Have to go to work early in the morning? Get off work late? Have chores and responsibilities? You have time. Get up earlier. Stay out later. There is always time. If you're on Facebook, you are making the decision to waste time and cheat yourself out of your promise, your goal. Only have 5 minutes? 5 minutes of squats, jumping jacks, push ups, sit ups, is an eternity. In 4 minutes you can get drenched in sweat only working out in a 6 by 6 square.. There is ALWAYS time. The AHA recommends 18 minutes of cardo a day. The military recommends 24 minutes a day. I guarantee you, within a 16 hour window you can find those 24 minutes. By instruction, at least in the Navy, you are required to PT 90 minutes a day at a minimum 3 days a week. Do it. No excuses. Everyday.
Don't go out looking for the better you. Don't spend your time day dreaming of the you you can be. That person is already there. It's up to you whether you really want to be that person or not.
