Thanks for sharing SGT (Join to see) for sharing photos from the Spanish Civil War which like all Civil Wars was brutal. In that war the communists were known as Republicans [government of Spain] [supported by USSR] while the conservatives were known as Nationalists [supported by Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy].
The Germans and Russians tested war machinery in that war. Ernest Hemingway traveled to Spain to cover the war for the North American Newspaper Alliance.

Made for propaganda purposes during the war by the German newsreel company Degeto Weltspiegel and sold to the home market in Germany, these newsreels provide a fascinating look at the German military. These German newsreels were seized by the U.S. government following the war, and ended up in the collection of the U.S. government."

The Germans sent the Condor Legion which was a unit composed of military personnel from the air force and army of Nazi Germany, which served with the Nationalists during the Spanish Civil War of July 1936 to March 1939.
The Soviets backed the International Brigade
"The International Brigade is an umbrella term given to numerous groups that arrived in Spain to help the Republican [communist government of Spain] cause – the overthrow of the Nationalist attempt to take over the country. Members of the International Brigade came from numerous countries – Great Britain, France, the USSR, and the former Yugoslavia for instance. However, while they may have had the same desire, the International Brigade was a collection of mainly men who had no loyalty to other groups within the International Brigade and followed no other leader than their own. Whether as a unified and cohesive force the International Brigade could have made any difference to the final outcome of the Spanish Civil War is open to conjecture."

Thank for such splendid research. These are great pictures, and the film is something I have never seen before. I knew of Hemingway's reporting, but I had never seen these particular pictures. George Orwell wrote most eloquently in Homage to Catalonia about his experiences. He later became an outspoken critic of the Soviets, Stalin in particular. He was seriously wounded in combat having been shot in the neck. I think Animal Farm is the most real depiction of communism, especially Stalinism, that has ever been written. When I taught the book in high school advanced English, I had to teach a lot of Russian history as background, so the students could understand exactly what totalitarianism really was and is.
