On Aug. 6, 1945, the United States dropped an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. It was the first time a nuclear weapon had been used in warfare. There were three strike planes that flew over Hiroshima that day: the Enola Gay, which carried the bomb, and two observation planes, the Great Artiste and the Necessary Evil.

My Dad and Uncles Angelo and Frank were scheduled for Operation Coronet. My Dad on a Destroyer, my Uncle Frank on a Carrier and my Uncle Angelo with the 38th Division. I am glad that they employed both nuclear devices

I was with the Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge National Reunion Group when we visited The Harry S. Truman Library. A number of Veterans of the 87th Infantry Division were there that had fought in Europe first were slated to train for and redeploy to Pacific summed it up well in a guest register. They wrote to the effect that Truman's Decision on using the bomb saved their lives. It's a shame it had to come to it but I'm thankful it saved so many more lives by ending the war! A timely post lest we forget PO1 Chip Nagel!

I wonder how many 100k casualties we would have had if we had invaded Japan as planned?? They were ready for the battle.
